Sonya Strong, House Of Glory Star, Tough As They Come

December 15, 2021,

Though it is a scripted world, Ladies Professional Wrestling is for the strong and mentally tough.

Those who are not, easily burn out or find a new profession.

Physical strength can lead to mental strength.

If you are a female pro wrestler and want to compete at the highest level, if you want to lift heavier objects, you need more physical strength.

The same can be said for emotional and mental strength.

The experts at psychologytoday.com educate, “Well, the same can be said for your mental muscles. If you want to be able to tackle bigger challenges and overcome more obstacles, you need more mental strength. Like physical muscles, your mental muscles require a good workout.”

We completely agree.

Apparently so does the sensational Lady Pro Wrestler Sonya Strong.

She is a super star who has performed under the promotion House Of Glory and other independent companies.

You should Google her video matches and you will see what we mean.

Here we will provide you with a taste with some match reviews.

VS SUMIE SAKAI

Her match against Sumie Sakai is a demonstration of great improvement.

Sumie Sakai is a Japanese professional wrestler and mixed martial artist.

She currently resides in the United States, appearing with professional wrestling promotions in the northeastern United States, such as Women's Extreme Wrestling and Chikara, as well as a regular performer in Ring of Honor, where she was the inaugural and longest reigning Women of Honor Champion.

Ms. Sakai became involved in wrestling when her friend and fellow judo practitioner, Megumi Yabushita, invited her to join the wrestling sport.

Our star trained under Jaguar Yokota and made her debut on April 20, 1997 with the Yoshimoto Ladies Pro Wrestling promotion, facing Yabushita in the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo.

Simply put, for Sonya, Sumie is not a newbie to be dominated and controlled. She is a formidable warrior who has been around the ring for some time.

This would be a good test for Sonya.

The match began with Sumie using some dirty tactics and one thing became clear early on was that Sumie was much faster than Sonya but Sonya was, well, much stronger.

If only she could get her hands on the fast moving Sumie.

Sumie’s MMA skills were very evident as she has previously competed professionally, even against UFC Fighters.

Surprisingly Sonya used a lot of high leg kicks herself. While this was a back and forth match and Sumie added some humor to delight the crowd, including giving Sonya a spanking, this appeared to be Sonya’s match to win.

In times past Sonya would have been easy prey in a match like this one but here she was resilient.

Good for her.

A clear improvement.

As the match wore on, Sonya began to use that strength and with a powerful backwards slam it was lights out for Sumie.

It was called a double panhandle DDT. It sure looked like it hurt.

The win goes to Sonya. Very impressive. Clear improvement.

VS VEDA SCOTT

A match against another journey fighter, who is rock solid, is her engagement with Veda Scott.

Sonya has evolved to have a strong air of confidence to arrogance and it is very real. She truly believes in herself and her wrestling abilities.

The match against Veda is competitive but Sonya is larger, stronger and continues to beat Veda to the punch. It borders on being a Sonya Strong show off.

Veda is a gamer but she just isn’t skilled enough for this version of Sonya.

She endures kicks to the head, being tossed out of the ring and absorbing Sonya’s DDT head buster which appeared to be the winning move, but it was not.

Veda escapes. Even the announcers, one of whom is rising star Deonna Purrazzo, who makes it very clear she doesn’t like Sonya’s cockiness, are both surprised that Veda survived that brutal smash.

Veda has one last chance for a pin of her own.

Sonya is undeterred and survives an almost pin on herself but regains the upper hand, folds Veda over by grabbing her tights and finishes her off.

Against the journey level female lady pro wrestlers, Sonya has become the front-runner.

You should always defeat the opponents you are supposed to defeat. It is the first rule of a run to a championship.

VS IVELISSE

The first thing that strikes you about this match is the improved venue.

Sometimes when you watch the Indie girls ply their trade, you can tell they are barn storming and traveling from one small community to another. The venue that they are at speaks to that.

We’ve seen the vibrant Indie girls wrestle out in parks, often in school gymnasiums, bar settings and other smaller showcases.

Wrestling at House of Glory is not the WWE but it is absolutely a major upgrade. It is much closer to the next step up. Those front row seats where the audience is up close and personal on their website, as June 2019, went for $50.

House of Glory (HOG) is an American professional wrestling school and promotion created by Amazing Red that has been featured on MTV.

Its time for Sonya to meet a polished rising star in the fiery and wrestling school polished red head, Ivelisse.

After reviewing countless Indie matches, right from the jump, you get a feel for who is going to win the match.

Their costumes, their resume certainly make a statement that they are on the rise and their persona say a lot.

Here, while we felt Sonya has absolutely improved, since Ivelisse is in the running for the HOG title, we weren’t sure the Sonya was ready to take the next step.

Ivelisse is a true pro.

Is that direct enough?

She’s got the impressive brand, as they say. She’s got the moves. Her body is to die for perfection. She’s strong and athletic and she can effectively play the crowd. At this moment she is not a true heel but she is close.

She’s a former contestant on the WWE’s Tough Enough. That’s saying a ton.

Our expectation is that she should win this one.

Maybe Sonya thinks differently. By the way she is wrestling, it appears so. She sure has lost a lot of that, I’m going to be dominated, baby fat. Sonya is turning into a real player.

Early on, Ivelisse is clearly the front runner as she begins to dictate the moves and match to Sonya. She’s confident to the point of being dismissive.

Her kicks, knockdowns and outmaneuvering of Sonya is very apparent right from the get go. As she is taunting Sonya, our shapely princess gives her a push, knocks her down and sends a message that she is not intimidated by Ivelisse.

She matches the redhead blow by blow. She blocks a kick and then delivers one herself. Sonya then wallops with a big clothesline. Ivelisse tries a kick of her own which Sonya blocks and then swirls with a loud pop blasting a Pele kick of her own then poses for the crowd. Sonya?

You go girl.

It is time for Ivelisse to bring Sonya back down to earth and she does. The emerging star begins to control the match and has three near pins on Sonya including a Dragon Suplex. Sonya looks weary but manages to escape.

Again and again.

You know how that one goes. If you let a supposed lesser opponent hang around long enough, what tends to happen?

The operative word here is “supposed”.

Ivelisse continues to control the match, pushing Sonya around, even face planting her with a DDT.

Even the announcer laments that Ivelisse has powered Sonya down to the mat most of this contest.

Very true.

But she still can’t put her away.

Sonya begins to re-find her way. She starts fighting back and soon delivers a loud spine buster that sends Ivelisse crashing to the mats.

The tide of the match appears to be turning.

The two girls smash some loud strikes against one another with Sonya delivering the majority of them. She pounds like a boxer only using her legs to deliver some powerful kicks. A big spin kick takes Ivelisse down to the mats with a thud.

Sonya’s kicks are devastating. This part of her game has massively improved.

Our New York maiden is proving she can truly choreograph and wrestle with the prime time players.

Sonya has arrived.

The two go back and forth but Sonya is clearly powering the most blows.

Since Ivelisse can’t deliver on the massive amount of near pins she had, all it takes is for Sonya to deliver the goods in the form of a face plant DDT and one, two, three and it is over.

In a shocker, Sonya wins over a prime time player.

Let that one sink in.

Now that our friend is taking it to the next level.

And as we all know, forging to the next level will be met with stiff competition.

SUMMARY

Sonya Strong is an absolute win and joy to watch.

That is completely understandable when a professional wrestler is both physical and mentally strong.
