You could call it the Golden Era of wrestling in San Francisco.
When it comes to America vs Europe, it actually expands beyond that.
When the Danube Women’s Wrestling team wrestled the girls of San Francisco’s Virago club, the matches took place in Europe.
Some are not aware that the Danube girls came to America and wrestled the girls at Catfight Haven, in the state of Georgia, as well.
That was a Golden Era in the sense; today, that no longer is happening. While a Session Provider may travel across the Atlantic, few are doing it as a team organized way.
Today we are going to travel back to that Golden Era and revisit, with excerpts, from three matches that became instant classics.
Fasten your airplane seat belts and enjoy.
LUZIA “THE GREAT” VS LONNIE

There was electricity in the air and Luzia adorned in a white top and orange bottom was blessed with a body of perfection. Lonnie sporting a red top and bottom looked athletic, sexy and ready for battle.
The girls were introduced by Jeff the Ref.
The match began fiercely as both gladiators tried to secure a brutal headlock. Luzia engaged first and Lonnie fought her off as both rolled off the mats.
Once back in action Luzia trapped Lonnie in a body scissors and a voice from a Virago alum screamed out “Turn towards her Lonnie!” Lonnie would struggle and get the upper hand but Luzia held on to the scissors. Lonnie had Luzia flat on her back and thought that she had a pin and an audience member informed her, “You can’t pin her while she has you in a body scissors.”
Lonnie replied, “Gotcha.” She understood.

Now on top, Lonnie attempted to grab Luzia to try and body slam her to break the scissors. Luzia quickly responded by grabbing Lonnie’s ankles. Gaining control Lonnie tried to legally choke Luzia to gain a submission but Jeff saw it as an illegal choke and asked her to break it. Lonnie replied “I’m not touching her neck, I’m touching her chin.”
The beauties were allowed a break and went back to their corners. Looking at Luzia’s corner was like viewing a Danube high school reunion. There was Hana attending to Luzia as Denise and other former DWW Stars watched.
Now, it was time for the second round.
The intense action picked up where it left off only this time Lonnie gained the advantage, applied a full nelson. A feminine voice screamed, “Get your hooks into her Lonnie!” After minutes of trying to escape, the great Luzia finally submitted.
The Virago crowd screamed wildly.
It took twelve minutes into the match but Jeff raised Lonnie’s hand to congratulate her for the first fall.
The third round began with a fury.
Lonnie thought she had pinned Luzia again and insisted that Jeff begin counting. She felt the count came late and the two girls rolled off the mat.
The third round action began again only this time Luzia snapped Lonnie into a wicked body scissors. Crunch! You could literally hear it. Lonnie submitted.
Now 14 minutes in the brutal match there finally was a second submission.
The intensity meter was now at an all-time high. Luzia and Lonnie attacked each other again, both being head hunters and almost slapping one another to gain control. Finally Lonnie did and something extremely unusual happened.
She trapped Luzia in a side body head scissors where Lonnie sat on her face from the side and Luzia desperately tried to escape. She fought valiantly to remove herself. Luzia is the ultimate escape artist.
This time she couldn’t.
She submitted. It was over.
VIRAGO’S GRACE VS DWW’S DANIELA

America and Europe will meet with a feminine handshake today.
Historic.
Then they will fight.
On the famous DWW blue mats. It is one for the history books.
America’s Grace is 28 and Europe’s Daniela is 23.
What is a female wrestler thinking about on the long flight over when she is going to battle against some of the best female submission wrestlers in the world? Waiting for her on the other side of the globe will be Luzia the Great and Daniela.
Both, some of DWW’s best.
The Slavic-German goddess Freya is the Goddess of abundance, desire, love, fertility and spring. Also Freya is the incarnation of wisdom and healing.
With an electric personality complete with a constant soft smile and strong feminine legs, in terms of the total package, Daniela was like watching Freya reborn.
After Daniela is finished with a fellow female wrestler, they tend to need a lot healing.
Daniela was one of DWW’s sexy big girls who had an impact whenever she wrestled. Her strong muscular thighs are feminine and incredibly beautiful.
Then there is Grace.
Class and dignity are the hallmarks of Virago’s Grace’s behavior.
She has wrestled in some of the most competitive places which includes the great Jackpin Convention of 2008.
Against the formidable DWW Warrior Daniela, she quietly readies herself.
Daniela is in the other corner, fully dressed and stretching. The Czech beauty looks confident and ready for battle.
Under the famous DWW outdoor tent, it is a beautiful day in Europe. The greenery in the background is serene and mesmerizing. You can almost smell it. The sun is shining brightly. This is a perfect day to relax among friends and watch some the highest levels of female submission wrestling anywhere.
The legendary Jeff the Ref, always adorned in white, will introduce the global fighters as he brings them to the center of the mats.
This International battle will be the best of five falls. First one to three wins.
There is a star studded crowd on hand as we see Gunther and Susanne in the audience.
At first glance, Daniela is more muscular and stronger than Grace, though the Berkeley beauty has a strong martial arts background. She will absolutely need to call upon all of that training today.
Time to engage.
Unlike today’s 2023 women’s wrestling matches, the two women begin on their feet, circling one another. Their intentions appear to be to grab one another from behind the head and neck area for a take down. The two struggle for an advantage. They try tripping one another as well.
Grace gets the trip but Daniela falls upon the smaller princess.
The Berkeley resident has Daniela in a headlock but unfortunately from the bottom position. Daniela continues to push hard underneath Grace’s chin.
Thus far, advantage Daniela.
The Czech Warrior wants a full mount but Grace has her left leg in a scissor and trapped.
Daniela breaks the headlock and furiously is trying to free her beautiful strong thighs. Do that and Grace is in big trouble, especially struggling from the bottom.
The struggle continues.
Daniela is working on a wrist lock, trying to secure and render ineffective, Grace’s right arm.
She gets it locked in.
Next the perfectly muscular brunette goes after Grace’s left wrist.
She locks that in too.
Grace is now one leg lock away from complete disaster. If Daniela breaks that leg free, she can move forward on Grace with a full smother.
The beautiful Czech girl frees her left leg. She now moves forward for the kill.
Jeff the Ref begins to count Grace out. Grace struggles several times and manages to get her shoulder up. Until she can’t. The feminine Grace is counted out at five. First submission to Daniela.
1-0 Daniela (3:42).
Grace gingerly walks back to her corner and we see the legendary Nadege relaxing in a chair behind sunglasses.
As they start again, Grace tries to leap upon Daniela but can’t make it stick and the two tumble to the ground.
More struggle.
Then the both roll on top of one another. Aggressive and very sexy. This plays to Daniela’s strength.
Soon Grace is rolled the wrong way, right into a side body scissor by Daniela, and given the strength of Daniela’s muscular thighs and Grace’s feminine form, this one is over quick. Grace taps out.
2-0 for Daniela (5:15).
VIRAGO’S AMY O VS BSA-DWW SVETLANA
If you are going to pick a fight, we’re not sure you would start with one of the formidable DWW Black Sea Amazons.
Virago’s famous Amy O, had decided to fly to Europe and challenge the DWW girls.
Very noble female wrestling cause. To be the best, you have to beat the best.
Says who?
If it were us, our first opponent might be Michaela, Ildi or possibly Renata B.
At least with those beauties, you stand a chance of winning.
But Svetlana? A former Black Sea Amazon, the forerunner to the very violent female MMA extreme fighting. Not only are you probably going to lose, but lose painfully.
And publicly.
Oh well, it is what it is.
What we love about Amy O, is that she was always very positive. Super optimistic.
Even after her stomach got crunched.
Today, against Svetlana, she will need all of the optimism she can get.
Some good wrestling skills would help as well.
It is a bright sunny day in Europe and with Amy at 28 and Svetlana at 23, they are in the prime of their fighting youth.
Adorned in bright red, Amy is standing in between two legends in Nadege of Belgium and Susanne of Germany. As usual the gorgeous San Francisco Bay Area resident has a look of complete optimism. Her body is stealth and perfect. The background is filled with luscious greenery under the famous DWW tent.
This would be the second match of the day.
The legendary Jeff the Ref introduces them in this highly anticipated fight.
There is a great buzz in the air as the two shake hands.
As the action begins, the two perfectly stealth warriors from two different countries circle one another. It is obvious this is not their first rodeo. Only the experienced need apply, in this one.
Amy immediately leaps at Svetlana’s head and neck area but misses. Svetlana simply brushes the San Franciscan aside as the two start grabbing at one another and reaching for their necks which turns into hard hand slaps that resonate the space.
This is right up Svetlana’s alley.
Amy leaps again and locks up Svetlana’s neck and both girls tumble to the mats. Unfortunately for Amy, Svetlana is on top. Not a position you want to be in with a BSA Warrior. You may never get up in one piece.
The struggle is on.
They circle around on the mats with Amy in gridlock and by the grimace on her face, a measure of pain as well. She wraps her legs around Svetlana’s right one to prevent a full mount.
Good move.
That’s okay for Svetlana who has trapped Amy in a brutal headlock and squeezes while she bends Amy, folding her into an excruciating position. The taller woman is also trying to trap Amy’s leg arm between her legs.
It works.
With Amy all wrapped up, Svetlana crunches that headlock and Amy’s face is obviously in pain.
The beautiful American taps out.
1-0 for Svetlana (3:23).
SECOND ROUND
During the break Svetlana rests in a chair while Amy, in her own corner, stands, bends over and stretches the crunch out.
Time to go again.
They circle one another. Svetlana has a wry smile on her face. Amy is going for the legs, including a potential leg trip while Svetlana is moving like a boxer, waiting her opening.
She gets it.
Amy leaps at her again and locks but she is much taller than Amy so this approach is to Svetlana’s advantage and once again she falls on top of Amy.
The porcelain beauty is in trouble.
Once again Svetlana tightens that headlock and crunches. Amy has no choice except to tap out.
2-0 for the BSA star (5:41).
SUMMARY
Given today’s climate, where there are limited major events and less wrestling companies, the Golden Era may never happen again. There is a life lesson though.
Don’t be sad it is over.
Be glad that it happened.
