San Francisco’s DoorDash Launches Its First Shared Commissary Kitchen

Something is cooking in the kitchen and it sure smells good.

It smells even better when you’ve had a share in cooking it.

On October 14, 2019 Fortune Magazine reported, “DoorDash is going beyond online delivery and has opened its first brick-and-mortar shop: A shared kitchen for four of its restaurant partners.

The company's first DoorDash Kitchens location in Redwood City, Calif., provides cooking space for Nations Giant Hamburgers, Rooster & Rice, Humphry Slocombe, and The Halal Guys. The kitchen also allows the restaurants the ability to offer food delivery to seven Bay Area cities and, pickup to 13 cities.”

The aroma of being in the San Francisco Bay Area seems to make companies more innovative than if they were elsewhere.

DoorDash Inc. is a San Francisco–based on-demand prepared food delivery service founded in 2013 by Stanford students Andy Fang, Stanley Tang, Tony Xu and Evan Moore.

The company is one of several technology companies that uses logistics services to offer food delivery from restaurants on-demand.

DoorDash launched in Palo Alto and, as of January 2018, had expanded to 56 metropolitan areas and more than 600 cities across North America.

DoorDash has raised more than $700 million over several financing rounds from investors including Charles River Ventures, SV Angel, Khosla Ventures, Sequoia Capital, SoftBank, GIC, and Kleiner Perkins. DoorDash was valued at $1.4 billion in 2018 during a round of funding.

They continue to catch the culinary world’s attention.

Recently on September 30, 2019 thrillist.com shared, “On Monday, McDonald's and DoorDash announced they've teamed up to hand out Big Macs for just a penny each all across the country, starting on September 30 and running all week through October 4. The deal is DoorDash's biggest "giveaway" to date, with a whopping one million one-cent Big Macs up for grabs, according to a company spokesperson.”

A Whopper for just one cent. Who would have thought? Great idea. No make that a delicious idea. A customer who participates was randomly entered in a contest to win $1 million dollars.

So what is the DoorDash philosophy?

Time to knock on their door at doordash.com, where they enlighten, “DoorDash is a technology company that connects people with the best in their cities. We do this by empowering local businesses and in turn, generate new ways for people to earn, work and live. We started by facilitating door-to-door delivery, but we see this as just the beginning of connecting people with possibility — easier evenings, happier days, bigger savings accounts, wider nets and stronger communities.”

Okay, that makes perfect sense.

They add, “With your favorite restaurants at your fingertips, DoorDash satisfies your cravings and connects you with possibilities — more time and energy for yourself and those you love.”

They clearly see the importance in staying innovative, competitive and creative. That is why they have gained attention with their recent moves.

These moves come as DoorDash continues to face sizzling competition from rivals Uber Eats, Grubhub, and Postmates, many of which are rolling out new programs and promotions to try to out cook and top one another.

In August of 2019, DoorDash purchased Caviar for $410 million, in an effort to bolster their presence in urban neighborhoods of major cities.

We can smell the home cooking from our neighborhood here in Nor Cal and we are hungry for more. Please enjoy.

DoorDash Launches Its First Shared Commissary Kitchen, Offering Customers More Restaurant Selection

Bay Area favorites including Nation's Giant Hamburgers, Rooster & Rice, Humphry Slocombe, and The Halal Guys Will Now be Available To Customers Across the Peninsula

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 14, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- DoorDash, the nation's largest on-demand destination for door-to-door delivery, is launching a shared commissary kitchen with multiple restaurants under one roof. The brand's to-go-only concept, DoorDash Kitchens, is located in Redwood City, California. With DoorDash Kitchens, this is the first time popular locally-founded and national restaurants including Nation's Giant Hamburgers, Rooster & Rice, Humphry Slocombe, and The Halal Guys will offer delivery, pickup, and group order options to local residents across the California Peninsula area.

DoorDash Kitchens provides on-demand delivery access from popular restaurants to customers across seven Bay Area markets including Atherton, Belmont, Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Redwood City, San Carlos, and Woodside. Pickup options are available to customers in 13 key suburban markets including Atherton, Belmont, Burlingame, Foster City, Los Altos, Menlo Park, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Redwood City, San Carlos, San Mateo, Sunnyvale, and Woodside.

Customers within range of DoorDash Kitchens can open up the DoorDash app and find these beloved restaurants in their feed, a welcome surprise from the far distances customers previously would travel to access their favorite foods. To celebrate the grand opening, DoorDash is offering $0 delivery fees to DoorDash Kitchens' restaurants including Nation's Giant Hamburgers, Rooster & Rice, Humphry Slocombe, and The Halal Guys through the end of the year.

"We are constantly working on innovations that help merchants find new, meaningful ways to reach customers and run their businesses more efficiently," said Fuad Hannon, Head of New Business Verticals at DoorDash. "We launched DoorDash over six years ago in the Peninsula, and can't wait to bring even more selection to the local community we know and admire."

DoorDash connects brick-and-mortar restaurants to the online convenience economy, providing businesses with transformational access to expand their reach and revenue. With DoorDash Kitchens, merchants can access new customers in neighboring communities without the same overhead costs involved in opening additional store locations. DoorDash Kitchens provides the infrastructure, maintenance, marketing, and last-mile logistics, offering an end-to-end solution that enables restaurateurs to focus on creating delicious meals.

"Given our founders' Bay Area roots, we are always interested in how technology can change the way food is delivered and shared," said Min Park, Chief Financial Officer of Rooster & Rice. "We were impressed by the overall partnership and scale DoorDash could reach with this concept, and we found the notion of a delivery-only kitchen in Redwood City very appealing as it helps us test out demand in new markets, reaching new customers and areas quickly."

DoorDash works in close partnership with each merchant, co-designing the DoorDash Kitchens' space with the restaurants to customize the environment to their needs. DoorDash hopes to empower a new set of entrepreneurs to thrive on the platform, further enabling customers to access their favorite restaurants and local delicacies at the touch of a button.

DoorDash Kitchens will build its team of up to 50 full or part-time employees in the Redwood City area as well as create flexible work opportunities for Dashers. With multiple restaurants in a shared space, DoorDash will empower these merchants to offer their customers new menu offerings and pairings unique to the DoorDash Kitchens' restaurants.
