Essential to the vibrancy, personality and financial health of a community is a neighborhood restaurant.
Well recognized national franchise eateries are fine too.
You know what to expect from the latter, no matter what city you visit or reside in. Having said that, a great neighborhood friendly restaurant, in terms of taste and ambiance, can take the food to a far more unique and greater height.
It helps to have pro-active owners who embrace the community as well.
This describes San Francisco Outerlands Restaurant located in the Sunset District.
The Sunset District is a neighborhood located in the west-central area of the city. It is the largest neighborhood in the West Of Twin Peaks Neighborhoods in San Francisco.
Having spent a lot of time there ourselves, the Sunset District is also the largest neighborhood within the city and county of San Francisco, and with a population of over 85,000 it is also the most populous. Golden Gate Park forms the neighborhood's northern border, and the Pacific Ocean (or, more specifically, the long, flat strand of beach known as Ocean Beach) forms its western border.
The Sunset District and the neighboring Richmond District (on the north side of Golden Gate Park) are often collectively known as The Avenues, because the majority of both neighborhoods are spanned by numbered north-south avenues.
It’s a neighborhood that is easy to walk in and given the recreational areas within, great for jogging and fitness outings.
The Sunset District contains several large park and recreation areas. The San Francisco Zoo is located in the southwestern corner of the neighborhood by Lake Merced, the largest lake within San Francisco.
Also within the Lake Merced area are several golf courses: the private Olympic Club and San Francisco Golf Club, and the public TPC Harding Park. Across from Lake Merced is Fort Funston, an old coastal battery, now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Fort Funston notably has some of the last remnants of the sand dune ecosystem that once covered the entire Sunset District.
Since we grew up in Daly City, a little to the South of Sunset, we can’t say enough about the wonderful memories that we have enjoyed there.
Having scored with Outerlands, it is a nice place to enjoy a meal as well.
The well-known San Francisco site that provides you with the city essentials on dining, sf.eater.com shares, “Little by little — one Dutch pancake brunch at a time — Outerlands has come to signify the Outer Sunset neighborhood as much as to serve it.”
Deliciously described. Well said.
This is consistent with Outerland’s thinking and mission which is at their dynamic site outerlandssf.com, “We are committed to an exploration of small business as a powerful means to connect personally and creatively with our larger community.”
How do they hope to accomplish that? They add:
by continuing to challenge ourselves in our creative process
– by rooting that process in our surroundings and community relationships
– by promoting the personal and career advancement of our staff
– by serving our patrons with warmth and originality
– by utilizing sustainable local resources at every opportunity
It is nice to have a long-term plan that is well-defined especially with your neighbors in mind.
They are loved within the community and desired and sought by those outside.
Even by the stars. One such star is Julia Roberts.
Julia established herself as a leading lady in Hollywood after headlining the romantic comedy film Pretty Woman (1990), which grossed $464 million worldwide. She has won three Golden Globe Awards, from eight nominations, and has been nominated for four Academy Awards for her film acting, winning the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Erin Brockovich (2000).
She was spotted enjoying a meal at Outerlands.
Who else would capture the moment besides eater.com who smiles, “Outerlands staffer Jaime San Felippo emails with more information on Roberts’ visit, saying “Yes, it’s true she had a salad, but she also had some tomato soup, a grilled cheese sandwich, a glass of rose and pear crisp for dessert. She also took home a loaf of our bread and some chocolate chip cookies.” Wrote San Felippo, “this is going to sound real trivial, but...I just thought it was important to let you know that she ate like a real person and not some stereotypical actress on a diet, like your movie quote implied. She was also so gracious and sweet to the waitress.”
Sounds like the gorgeous Julia we have all come to know and love.
Ms. Roberts was the highest-paid actress in the world throughout most of the 1990s and in the first half of the 2000s.
The power is in the green numbers.
Her fee for 1990's Pretty Woman was $300,000. In 2003, she was paid an unprecedented $25 million for her role in Mona Lisa Smile (2003). As of 2017, her net worth was estimated to be $170 million.
People magazine has named her the most beautiful woman in the world a record five times.
So, when she loves to eat at your restaurant, that speaks volumes.
In regards to Outerlands, more diners from outside of the community continue to rave about it at Trip Advisor:
“We splurged on fancy brunches during our weekend trip to San Francisco. This was an excellent visit! A number of people were waiting to be seated outside the restaurant (on a Saturday) but that's always a good indication that it's a great place to eat.”
And another.
“This is a sophisticated restaurant for the mature dining crowd. It's for people who have extra cash for spending because it's gonna be in the Outer Sunset near the Judah corridor. These diners must like California dining and foodie dining.”
And one more.
“My first time for restaurant. Great atmosphere - driftwood on wall and planks.... great music at the right sound level! Nice seating inside and out. Intimate seating where we were and could watch the kitchen magic. Worth the wait!”
We didn’t need much convincing after knowing that Julia Roberts chose to eat there, thus the reviews at Trip Advisor should confirm what so many inside of the Sunset District neighborhood already knew.
Essential to the vibrancy, personality and financial health of a community is a neighborhood restaurant.
It helps if, like Outerlands, it is incredibly unique and tasty too.
