Pandemic Induced Losses, Time To Reinvent Yourself

July 12, 2020,

You do realize what you’re not thinking, right?

If you feel your livelihood has been destroyed by the coronavirus pandemic and that your financial world is in ruins, you might be right.

But also know that it can be temporary. In fact, it most likely is. It’s up to you.

Know this too. Many people who have gone on to great success had their new lives launched after a massive setback or failure. Why?

You now have an opportunity for a second chance.

To create the new life that you really want as opposed to the previous one where you went to college to get a good job and primarily filled the role that your society, family or you decided you should have.

Before you evolved.

Now you are older and getting closer to understanding who you are and what your real purpose in life might be in the new world that you are creating.

The magical music group The Seekers opened our minds up to that.

The Seekers are an Australian folk-influenced pop quartet, originally formed in Melbourne in 1962.

They were the first Australian pop music group to achieve major chart and sales success in the United Kingdom and the United States.

They were popular during the 1960s with their best-known configuration as: Judith Durham on vocals, piano, and tambourine; Athol Guy on double bass and vocals; Keith Potger on twelve-string guitar, banjo, and vocals; and Bruce Woodley on guitar, mandolin, banjo, and vocals.

The group had Top 10 hits in the 1960s with "I'll Never Find Another You", "A World of Our Own", "Morningtown Ride", "Someday, One Day" (written by Paul Simon) and "Georgy Girl", the title song of the film of the same name.

The deeply emotional song I’ll Never Find Another You is our focus here.

“There's a new world somewhere
They call the promised land
And I'll be there someday
If you could hold my hand
I still need you there beside me
No matter what I do
For I know I'll never find another you…”

Powerful lyrics indeed.

You’ll never find another you but you could re-invent another you. If your previous life has collapsed, creating another you might just be the perfect future solution.

So if the global pandemic has drained or decimated your life through job loss and financial ruin, this is the perfect time for a life reassessment or re-invention.

We have a visiting female writer who did just that and would like to share her story with you.

How Can You Financially Reinvent Yourself?

Today I Will Financially Reinvent Myself!

I don't think anyone wakes up one morning and says, "Today, I think I will reinvent myself financially", or "I'm going to totally reinvent my life today". No, it usually takes something drastic hitting you square between the eyes.

For me, it was a major hit to my health. For the last 25 years I've experienced periods of time, sometimes long periods, when I would be flat on my back due to a health condition called CFIDS, or Chronic Fatigue & Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (In the UK it's ME, Myalgic encephalomyelitis).

Before this last resurgence, I was working full time in a job I loved, with people I loved. I was also going to school part-time to obtain my degree. Some people would think it was a little late in life to go for a degree, but there were two reasons I was after it. I would be the first in my family to ever get a college degree, and if I wanted to move up from my administrative support role where I worked, I would need a degree even though I had a ton of experience.

Then, in just a few short weeks it was all gone. If that wasn't bad enough, to add insult to injury, I had a heart attack! It was not a high point in my life for sure.

As I started to recover I realized I needed to reinvent myself yet again.

The Big "HOW" Do I Reinvent Myself

There are lots of reasons people ask themselves this question of, "How can I reinvent myself?" Just a few include:

  • Divorce
  • Health Conditions
  • Debt
  • Loss of a loved one
  • Bankruptcy
  • Loss of a job/the job market
  • Empty Nest Syndrome
  • Need more time/time flexibility

The answer is simple, but it isn't easy.

There is some ground work that needs to be done to be truly successful at reinventing yourself financially:

  • Mindset conditioning
  • Determining your "WHY"
  • Creating a path to passion

I feel that these 3 things are the main focus of reinventing yourself financially. Let's look at each one briefly.

Condition Your Mind!

You wouldn't wake up one day and decide you were going to bench press 150 pounds after breakfast without prior conditioning to do so, right? Heck no! I can think of all kinds of ways you would hurt yourself! No, you would work up to it, condition your body, build it up. The same applies for conditioning your mindset.

Any major life change for the better will only be successful with the proper mindset. The easiest way for me to break it down is a growth vs fixed mindset.

In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work-brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Virtually all great people have had these qualities. (MindsetOnline.com)

If there are any road blocks in your thinking about reinventing yourself financially such as, "I can't", "It won't work", "I'm too old", etc. then you are right! You must be willing to take the steps necessary to insure that your mindset is conducive to such a major life change. That doesn't mean you can't start with the changes you want to make, only that you must be aware and working on your mindset.

The "WHY" Of It Isn't WooHoo!

Determining the "Why" of financially reinventing yourself is often brushed aside and belittled as "woohoo" or "new agey" thinking. You know what I mean. It is actually one of the most critical things you need to do when taking up such an endeavor!

If you don't have a big enough "why" you are doing what you are doing, you will most likely justify quitting! For instance, me in my situation, my "why" became:

I am financially reinventing myself so that I can feel empowered during my recovery, accomplish my dreams of moving to the coast and having a secure, comfortable retirement wherein I can spend time with my family and travel.

I have made my "why" statement clear, concise and easy enough to remember at any time. I am emotionally committed to it so when I have doubts and discouragements, which we all do, then I will be able to say, "NO!" and repeat my "why statement" back to myself.

A Path To Passion

Lastly, but by no means the least, you need to create the path to passion as you financially reinvent yourself.

What does that mean? If you are going to go through all the trouble of reinventing yourself to accomplish something new and better financially, you should make damn sure you are passionate about it!

If your plan is for a new career, be passionate about what you choose to do. If you are thinking entrepreneurship, choose something you can be passionate about! Decide FIRST what lights your fire, THEN come up with a plan to accomplish it.

A note of caution here. Unless you really are passionate about psychology for instance, and the only way to do something by way of psychology is to get a degree, don't go back to school! I realize this may not be a popular point of view, but MOST of the time a degree is not required to do something you will love.

I'm not saying you might not need a new skill set, but if there is any way to avoid thousands and thousands of student loan debt, I suggest you do it. Nothing takes the wind out of your sails faster than a load of debt hanging over your shoulders.

Reinventing yourself financially, or any other way, requires commitment, hard work, and a positive mindset, but it can be the most rewarding and fulfilling accomplishment of your life!
