San Francisco’s Stonestown Shopping, A Lush Fashionable Experience

You can hear the whispers from way over here. From across the pond.

Yes, the large one called the Atlantic Ocean. How are they doing it?

And they’re doing it so well.

Lush homemade cosmetics. What a wonderful holistic name.

You should be aware of them. They are making some bold moves on the global front.

Lush is a cosmetics retailer headquartered in Poole, Dorset, United Kingdom.

The company follows a "no advertising policy" in which the company does not spend money on TV campaigns or celebrity endorsements and instead relies heavily on user-generated content.

The target market is young adult women ages 18–45 who live in cities.

Lush produces creams, soaps, shampoos, shower gels, lotions, moisturizers, scrubs, masks and other cosmetics for the face, hair, and body using only vegetarian or vegan recipes.

Solid shampoos as well as "Toothy Tabs" which are solid toothpaste tablets are also available for purchase online and in retail stores. Lush is also best known for their bath bombs which are solid bars of sodium bicarbonate, citric acid, essential oils and natural butters that fizz out when dropped in water, and can produce an array of colors and fragrances.

As of July 2012, Lush began selling their "Emotional Brilliance" makeup collection, which includes liquid lipsticks, liquid eyeliners, and cream shadows. Lush also launched their first mascara, Eyes Right, under the "Emotional Brilliance" line.

They take a different approach in how and where their products are produced.

Lush products are made in factories or "kitchens" as the staff calls them, around the world including Poole, Dorset; Toronto, and Vancouver Canada; Zagreb, Croatia; Düsseldorf, Germany; and Australia.

Lush marks its trademark black tub products with stickers of the actual creators of the product being sold, a unique trademark placed on their recyclable polypropylene plastic black pots. The company also offers customers a way to recycle used black pots by bringing empty ones back to the store for a free Fresh Face Mask for every five returned.

Very earth friendly and innovative.

Stores do not typically sell products older than four or five months and most products have a shelf life of approximately 14 months, depending on the particular item.

Lush products are 100% vegetarian, and 85% of the products are also vegan. They often contain fruits and vegetables such as grapefruit juice, vanilla beans, Aloe Vera, avocado butter, rosemary oil, fresh papaya, and coconut. However, some products contain lanolin, honey, and/or beeswax.

Continually enhancing their product to be consistent with their earth friendly philosophy, eggs used to be in their products but was removed early 2019.

Consumers seem to love their style.

Here is what the media has been reporting.

Up in Spokane, Washington, on February 6, 2020, spokesman.com informs, “After Lush Cosmetics sold out of its limited edition Koala-shaped soaps that raised money for wildlife affected by the Australian bushfires, customers begged the company via social media to add more.

The company released 900 more soaps on its website Monday and sold out within five minutes, illustrating just how strong demand is among consumers for its handmade, colorful bath bombs, uniquely-shaped soaps, body scrubs, shampoos and fragrances.”

The Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette also shared, “The first Lush Fresh Handmade Cosmetics store in Arkansas is set to open this summer in the Promenade at Chenal in west Little Rock.

The retailer specializes in a range of beauty products, including bath bombs, which dissolve in water to produce colors and fragrance. Other popular items sold in its stores include face masks, shampoos, and lotions. Lush is based in the United Kingdom and prides itself on not testing on animals and using fresh ingredients. According to the company’s website, there are more than 250 Lush stores in North America.”

Sounds like a wonderful expansion.

From foundation to global growth, here is their story.

At lushusa.com their group relates, “Mark Constantine and Liz Weir first met in the early ‘70s while working at a beauty salon in the tiny seaside town of Poole, England. Mark was a trichologist (an expert in the science of the hair and scalp) and Liz was a beauty therapist. Both were interested in natural beauty products, so decided to create a business of their own.

The first shop was simply designed, and naked products did away with frivolous packaging—most money for this new business went into keeping things simple and sourcing fresh, quality ingredients. In fact, the Lush shops you see today aren’t much different than the very first Lush shop in Poole.

Fast forward to 1995, when Mark Wolverton and Karen Delaney-Wolverton discovered these unique shops during a trip to London. They fell in love with the philosophy behind the brand where cosmetics were made using the freshest ingredients, not tested on animals and sold fresh to customers. They worked with the founders and, in 1996, opened the very first Lush shop in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Today, there are more than 250 shops across North America all supported by head offices, factory and distribution facilities in Vancouver and Toronto.”

We love everything San Francisco and there is a Lush operation here in the Stonestown Mall.

Stonestown Galleria is a shopping mall in which features Target as its anchor.

In a sign of the times and further evidence of the so-called retail apocalypse, its former anchor stores are Macy's and Nordstrom.

Stonestown is located immediately north of San Francisco State University and near Mercy High School and Lowell High School.

The mall’s management team invites, “Whether you’re a city-dwelling resident or you’re just passing through, time spent in San Francisco calls for a visit to Stonestown Galleria. This premier shopping center boasts more than 100 specialty stores filled with your new favorite things. From fashion-forward customers to true outdoorsmen, there's something for everyone here.”

From in-store demonstrations and classes to a wide variety of entertaining activities, they are always offering fun experiences for their guests.

If you view their directory, they have a nice variety of retailers to choose from, including Lush.

Stonestown’s array of stores nicely compliments a very lush experience.

Their message is spreading and being warmly welcomed. Here is in part why, as they reiterate, “Being vegetarian is something we’ve always been passionate about. Since the very beginning, we’ve actively sourced vegetarian alternatives to the animal ingredients regularly used in cosmetics. Glycerin, for example, can be derived from animal fat, but the glycerin we use is made from non-GMO rapeseed oil, resulting in luxurious, vegetarian products.

We do use ingredients like honey and yogurt in some of our products, which is why our product range is vegetarian but not completely vegan. But please rest assured that we ensure our ingredients are sourced only from suppliers as staunch about their own cruelty-free practices as we are.

We create vegetarian products because we don’t believe in cruelty to animals: not for food, not for clothing and definitely not for cosmetics.”
