April 14, 2021,
There is no better way to start the day than with a nice warm cup of coffee. For some, make that hot coffee.
We love the cream and sugar fix. Milk works too.
Add the social factor when you go to Starbucks and you get the complete package.
During the current pandemic it might be easy to get distracted and not think about what is going on in the world of coffee and to our delight, there is much going on.
Speaking of Starbucks, as reported by cnbc.com on March 17, 2021, “Starbucks plans to start testing Cold Pressed Espresso in some cafes by the end of the year as consumers increasingly stick to cold drinks for their caffeine jolt.”
Some like it hot (sounds like a movie), and apparently many like it cold.
The report goes on to share that More than 50% of the beverages that they sell at Starbucks are cold.
When it comes to competition, we didn’t realize that the fast food giant McDonalds is in competition with Starbucks. We saw them in very different coffee consumption categories. We have had many a cup of coffee at McDonalds and loved it. Very true.
Yet, the team at the investment site fool.com explains, “Last June, I told investors to buy shares of Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) instead of McDonald's (NYSE:MCD). At the time, I noted Starbucks faced fewer competitors than McDonald's, had more growth opportunities in China, and locked in more customers with a stronger digital ecosystem.”
So, Starbucks is making great inroads in China. Massive population. Sounds like a great idea.
Everywhere a company can generate sales is a great idea especially since the pandemic has reduced the profits of coffee companies worldwide.
The pandemic has had its impact.
We learn from the news leader bbc.com, “This year has not been easy for people in the coffee industry, including 25 million smallholder farmers who are responsible for growing 80% of the world’s coffee. In total, 125 million people depend on coffee for their livelihood, from transporting and roasting the beans to selling the final product. Baristas and coffee shop owners were some of the first to close the doors to their businesses as lockdowns began. Some never reopened.”
Sad to hear.
Having said that, there is a bright spot.
As shared at conservation.org, “Across Peru, the COVID-19 pandemic has left millions without jobs — battering the economy, draining public coffers and buffeting high-grossing industries, from mining to tourism.
But in the Alto Mayo Protected Forest, where the Amazon meets the Andes, coffee farmers were spared much of the economic devastation that gripped Peru’s cities and towns.”
The article continues by reporting that farmers in the remote forest had a banner year, exporting 336 tons of organic and fair-trade coffee to Europe, New Zealand and the United States in 2020 which is one-third more than the previous year.
Very good to know.
There is a familiar face that is placing a new spin on coffee promotion and it might surprise you as to who they are. Please read on.

WASHINGTON, April 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Postal Service celebrates America's love of coffee today with the issuance of four new stamps. Whether milky, dark as night, sweetened, flavored or highly concentrated, many coffee drinks have one thing in common — they begin with espresso.
This booklet of 20 stamps features four unique designs illustrating popular espresso drinks — espresso, cappuccino, caffe latte and caffe mocha. It may be purchased at usps.com.
Capturing the inviting atmosphere of an early 20th-century café, artist Terry Allen created each digital illustration with the style of 1920s and 1930s advertising posters in mind.
The names of the espresso drinks appear in art deco-inspired lettering above or below each enticing cup.
Art director Greg Breeding designed the stamps with original artwork by Allen.
Espresso drinking in the United States is at an all-time high. With the growing popularity of artisanal coffee shops, extensive research on the roasting and brewing process, and continued innovation in machinery to make the perfect cup, specialty coffee is better than it has ever been.
When it comes to espresso, most Americans rely on a barista working at a coffeehouse to carefully craft their specialty drink, but at-home espresso machines are also growing in popularity. Whether a routine part of getting going in the morning or a reason to gather socially at a local café, drinking beverages made with espresso has become increasingly trendy.
