June 18, 2021,
Towering above virtually everything else in glorious San Francisco can make you very famous.
Maybe even have you star in a movie as well.
Coit Tower was a prominent landscape feature in Alfred Hitchcock's 1958 film, Vertigo, which was set largely in San Francisco. Our Tower of Power also was featured in the 1971 Clint Eastwood film Dirty Harry.
No doubt it made Clint’s day.
Coit Tower is a 210-foot tower in the Telegraph Hill neighborhood of San Francisco.
It sure has made our day and that of many other tourists and natives alike. It is breathtaking and striking.
The iconic structure offers panoramic views over the city and the bay. The tower, in the city's Pioneer Park, was built between 1932 and 1933 using Lillie Hitchcock Coit's bequest to beautify the city of San Francisco. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 29, 2008.
The art deco tower, built of unpainted reinforced concrete, was designed by architects Arthur Brown, Jr. and Henry Howard.
Coit Tower was listed as a San Francisco Designated Landmark in 1984[2] and on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.
Check this out. The interior features fresco murals in the American Social Realism style, painted by 25 different onsite artists and their numerous assistants, plus two additional paintings installed after creation offsite.
The tower, which stands atop Telegraph Hill in San Francisco's Pioneer Park, offers panoramic views of San Francisco including "crooked" Lombard Street, Nob Hill, Russian Hill, Twin Peaks, Aquatic Park, Pier 39, the Financial District, the Ferry Building, as well as San Francisco Bay itself including Angel Island, Alcatraz, Treasure Island, and the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges.
Also known as the Coit Memorial Tower, it was dedicated to the volunteer firemen who had died in San Francisco's five major fires.
Telegraph Hill, the tower's location, has been described as the most optimal 360 degree viewing point to the San Francisco Bay and five surrounding counties.
Yes indeed. Coit Tower is an optimal destination on your vacation itinerary.
The team at Trip Advisor provides us with a review from one clever traveler, “There is a windy road that lead you up to Coit tower. We were told parking can be tricky. Well, there are maybe 25 parking spots available at the base of the tower. We arrived around 4:00 and sat in a line of cars that were waiting for spots to open up. I suggest if you are touring the Tower with more than 3 people, have 1/2 the group walk up to the tower and purchase the $8 elevator tickets to get to the top of the tower. They can wait in line inside while you wait outside to park the car. From the time we parked our car, bought our tickets, waiting in line for the elevator ride up, it was 1 hour from start to finish. This is why parking spaces do not free up quickly. The elevator only take up approx 8 people at a time and brings down the same amount. There is no time limit once you are on top of the tower in the viewing area.”
Very good advice.
You should keep that in mind because, mildly post Covid, Coit Tower is now open to the public again.
The informative group at kalingatv.com inform, “San Francisco: Coit Tower, the iconic white concrete column defining the San Francisco skyline since 1933, has reopened to tourists for the first time in 15 months. The 210-foot welcoming beacon, which houses the largest Depression Era art collection in the US, normally sees up to 1,500 visitors a day, reports Xinhua news agency.”
We’re expecting those numbers to go up. Given the historic nature of the tower blended with modern enhancements, if you visit, we certain you will eternally cherish the experience.
The latest news and announcements from Mayor London N. Breed
Coit Tower to Welcome Visitors Again
San Francisco, CA — Coit Tower, the iconic white column defining the San Francisco skyline, will welcome visitors Thursday, June 17 for the first time in 15 months, Mayor London N. Breed announced today.
The 210-foot welcoming beacon, which also houses the largest Depression Era art collection in the U.S., normally sees up to 1,500 visitors a day. Health orders shuttered the National Historic Site March 15, 2020.
Coit Tower will resume selling tickets for elevator rides to its observation deck, where sightseers can enjoy 360-degree views of the City and the San Francisco Bay. Masks are required in the elevator.
Visitors can admire the 26 murals inside the tower’s base for free. The frescoes, which depict life in California during the Depression, were painted in 1934 by artists employed by the Public Works of Art Project, a precursor to the Works Progress Administration.
Guided tours of the artwork will be limited to six people at one time. Coit Tower’s gift shop and café kiosk will also re-open Thursday.
“From its panoramic views to the Depression Era frescoes painted on its walls, Coit Tower gives visitors a glimpse of the City’s breathtaking beauty and the resilience of its residents,” said Mayor Breed. “I’m thrilled to open this beloved landmark to the public again.”
The simple fluted tower is named for Lillie Hitchcock Coit, a famously eccentric patron of the City’s firefighters. Coit died in 1929, leaving a substantial bequest “for the purpose of adding to the beauty of the city I have always loved.” The funds were used to build both the tower and a monument to Coit’s beloved volunteer firefighters, in nearby Washington Square. Coit Tower was completed in 1933.
“Coit Tower is a special place—not just for tourists but locals who want to see their city in a new and awe-inspiring way. We’re grateful to be able to provide this experience to visitors again,” said San Francisco Recreation and Park Department General Manager Phil Ginsburg.
Coit Tower is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. everyday. For more information, visit Coit Tower online.
