July 31, 2021,
Platform shoes that make you taller are a matter of style.
Platforms that can help millions are a matter of substance.
Naomi Osaka uses her global platform with substance and style.
When Naomi speaks, millions listen.
Naomi Osaka is a mega-star Japanese professional tennis player.
She has been ranked No. 1 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) and is the reigning champion at the US Open and the Australian Open.
Her seven titles on the WTA Tour also include two at the Premier Mandatory level. At the 2018 US Open and the 2019 Australian Open, Ms. Osaka won her first two Grand Slam singles titles in back-to-back Grand Slam tournaments, and is the first player to achieve this feat since Jennifer Capriati in 2001.
She also became the first woman to win successive Grand Slam singles titles since Serena Williams in 2015.
Here, in part, is why she has such a massive platform.
Naomi is one of the world's most marketable athletes, having been ranked eighth among all athletes in endorsement income in 2020. She was also the highest-earning female athlete of all time by annual income that year.
Nike has been Ms. Osaka's apparel sponsor since 2019, having replaced Adidas who had sponsored her for four years. With Nike, Naomi has a clothing collection featuring her monogram logo that uses her initials and is inspired by the Japanese flag.
The Japanese sporting equipment manufacturer Yonex has supplied her with rackets since 2008.
Our star is a brand ambassador for Japanese automobile manufacturer Nissan and Japanese electronics manufacturer Citizen Watch. She also endorses several other Japanese companies, including noodle maker Nissin Foods, cosmetics producer Shiseido, the broadcasting station Wowow, and airline All Nippon Airways (ANA).
In January 2021, Osaka was named the brand ambassador for Tag Heuer watches as well as Louis Vuitton and she will appear in their Spring-Summer 2021 campaign
She was the 2021 Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year.
The Laureus World Sports Awards is an annual award ceremony honoring individuals and teams from the world of sports along with sporting achievements throughout the year.
It is supported by its global partners Mercedes-Benz, IWC Schaffhausen and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group. The awards support the work of Laureus Sport for Good, which supports over 160 community projects in more than 40 countries. These programs aim to use the power of sport to end violence, discrimination and disadvantage, and prove that sport has the power to change the world.
The name "Laureus" is derived from the Greek word for laurel, considered a traditional symbol of victory in athletics.
In life, we take our victories as we get them.
Naomi has far more than many. That comes with perks.
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Naomi became the first tennis player to light the Olympic cauldron during the opening ceremony.
Keeping it all in the family, one of the charities that Naomi is involved with is a partnership with her sister. As shared at tennisworldusa.org, “Former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka, of Japan, has said that the first batch of the masks she designed with her sister to benefit UNICEF's COVID-19 relief efforts have already sold out.”
The article adds that the tennis luminary has been exploring her fashion creativity as well. In February, she debuted her first collection at New York Fashion Week, which she had designed in partnership with her sister and Hanako Maeda’s ADEAM fashion house.
It is wonderful to have platforms that allow you to see so much around you.
It is admirable that Naomi uses her platform to help those who desperately need to be heard and seen.
Naomi always has an important project in the works.
She now has another powerful team that desires to work with her.
She is always on the go.
