Unite With The World For Orphaned Pets

September 25, 2021,

Over the years, pictures of family members and friends have been placed on the fireplace mantle and some have come down, depending upon when the relationships went sour, but one picture that has stayed over a friend’s mantle for decades and is never coming down is the one of his dog.

His little puppy.

He eternally loved his dog who passed away. When that happened he cried like a puppy. Why?

Because the dog was the only one in his life who unconditionally loved him.

Sometimes that wasn’t easy. At least for some of his relatives and friends.

He named him Roto.

One of his best memories was when Roto was a puppy, looking up at him with those puppy doe eyes while his cute tongue was hanging out as he cooked some chicken rotisserie style in his back yard.

Roto couldn’t wait for his tasty morsel, practically climbing over the pant legs to get to it.

Hence the name.

“The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too.”… Samuel Butler

According to the team at statista.com, “Over 63 million households in the United States owned at least one dog according to a 2019/20 pet owners survey, making them the most widely owned type of pet across the U.S. at this time. Cats and freshwater fish ranked in second and third places, with around 42.7 million and 11.5 million households owning such pets, respectively.”

We love our little doggies. Big ones too.

So does Canada.

At the Canadian Animal Health Institute cahi-icsa.ca, a group who knows a thing or two about pets, they share, “From 2016 to 2018, the Canadian dog population has continued to grow while the population of cats has stabilized. Cats continued to outnumber dogs with 8.3 million cats considered household pets in 2018, down slightly from 2016. Dog population figures for 2018 increased to 8.2 million, up from 7.6 million in 2016.  The Canadian dog population is now nearly equal to the cat population for the first time since these measures were established in 2004.”

Canada and the United States have so many blissful things in common.

This idea is catching on and we wondered why someone didn’t think of this decades ago.

Imagine what your cubicle filled office, with little or no windows nearby, would be like if employees could bring their well-behaved pets to work?

We think that is a great idea.

Hugs and kisses all around.

“I let the dog out, or I let him in, and we talk some. I let him know I like him, and he lets me know he likes me.”… Kurt Vonnegut

By allowing dog lovers to bring their pets to work, dog-friendly workplaces help avoid such a conflict of priorities. So even if an employee needs to stay late in the office, instead of rushing home, she can take her dog for a walk, on break, have her pet take care of business and the employee can get back to business and even stay late.

It would certainly boost morale and increase social conversations between the sexes.

Sounds a little romantic.

Certainly would bring a smile to a lot of faces.

The office that we used to work in sure could have used a cute puppy or two.

We sure hope you have a puppy to experience the joy that many of us have.

Do you have a puppy? If you don’t, have you ever thought about adopting one? This would be a perfect time.

There is a group bringing worldwide awareness to the cause. Please read on.

RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif., Sept. 23, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Helen Woodward Animal Center invites animal-lovers everywhere to participate in the global event for Remember Me Thursday®(RMT), a worldwide pet adoption awareness campaign now in its 9th year. The combination in-person/virtual event will unite animal advocates from locations as far away as Puerto Rico, Japan, Croatia, and Kazakhstan, virtually via video chat, to simultaneously light up the world for orphan pets. Helen Woodward Animal Center invites the public to join us on Remember Me Thursday®, TODAY, September 23 at 9:00 a.m. PST to #SeeTheLight about pet adoption.

RMT was established in 2013 by Helen Woodward Animal Center President and CEO Mike Arms. Moved by the staggering statistics that over a million homeless pets lose their lives each year in the U.S., Arms put out a call to rescue organizations in an attempt to create a social media global awareness campaign. As creator of the International Pet Adoptathon and the International Home 4 the Holidays® program (placing over 18 million pets in homes since 1999), he was able to send out an expansive request and the response was significant.

"We understand that not everyone is in the position to adopt a pet," explained Arms, "but we also know that anyone who loves animals and is tapped into social media has the ability to share a message of support. By uniting all of these social media voices on one day, we can make a larger impact and really affect change."

Now in its ninth year, RMT has been supported by 190 countries with hundreds of thousands of individuals and more than 1,000 separate animal welfare organizations around the globe holding candle-lighting ceremonies of their own, spreading the message on social media, or lighting a virtual candle. The enormous swell of celebrity support includes this year's spokesperson Brittany Aldean, as well as stars such as Kristin Chenoweth, Carrie Ann Inaba, Katherine Heigl, Rick Springfield, Wynonna Judd, Bethenny Frankel, George Lopez, along with dozens of athletes, designers, musicians, and social media influencers. With over 100 luminaries onboard, the star power behind the campaign has resulted in the topic trending each year on both Facebook and Twitter, garnering more than 1.5 billion social media impressions since its start.

Last year's pandemic-restricted virtual event united representatives from animal welfare organizations and campaign luminaries as far away as Australia, Estonia, and Singapore via international Zoom Call. The emotional meeting was so impactful that Helen Woodward Animal Center has decided to incorporate a virtual global connection in this year's ceremony, as well.  Speakers from each organization will share the state of animal welfare in their area and how they are commemorating the pet adoption awareness campaign.

The ceremony will also include words from RMT founder and Center President and CEO Mike Arms, a reading of the official RMT poem and a presentation of the RMT Rescue Pet Hero award. The event will end with a heartfelt international candle lighting in remembrance of the millions of orphan pets still waiting in shelters for their own forever homes.

The very special international RMT Zoom call and ceremony will be available online for the animal-loving public to watch. Those who wish to register to watch can click here. The public can also get involved by tweeting, tagging, posting and sharing the beauty and life-saving significance of pet adoption using the hashtags #RememberMeThursday and #SeeTheLight and tagging @hwac.

Animal-lovers can also win life-saving funds, toys and food for adoptable pets looking for forever families at their favorite non-profit, pet adoption organization. To enter the Remember Me Thursday Social Media Contest, simply upload your rescue pet's photo and story to the #RememberMeThursday Photo Wall for a chance to win!* (*Restrictions apply. Final selection remains at the sole discretion of Helen Woodward Animal Center).
