In times past, especially on film, greenhouses were often depicted in cautionary tales about a dystopian future where good, clean, fresh, healthy food would be hard to produce and obtain for the masses.
In some scenarios, greenhouse production is all that kept that vital life source from becoming extinct.
Silent Running is a 1972 environmental-themed American post-apocalyptic science fiction film. It is the directorial debut of Douglas Trumbull, and stars Bruce Dern, Cliff Potts, Ron Rifkin, and Jesse Vint.
In the storyline, in the future, all plant life on Earth is becoming extinct. As many specimens as possible have been preserved in a series of enormous, greenhouse-like geodesic domes, attached to large spaceships, one of which is named Valley Forge, forming part of a fleet of American Airlines space freighters, currently just outside the orbit of Saturn.
Eventually even they are threatened.
Fortunately that is a movie but unfortunately, in real life, animal and plant species are becoming extinct daily.
As reported by nature.com, “Up to one million plant and animal species face extinction, many within decades, because of human activities, says the most comprehensive report yet on the state of global ecosystems. According to the report, agricultural activities have had the largest impact on ecosystems that people depend on for food, clean water and a stable climate. The loss of species and habitats poses as much a danger to life on Earth as climate change does.”
In an effort to slow down this current and even larger looming crisis, greenhouses still have a place and can be a major factor in reversing this dire trend.
A greenhouse is a structure with walls and roof made chiefly of transparent material, such as glass, in which plants requiring regulated climatic conditions are grown.
These structures range in size from small sheds to industrial-sized buildings.
A miniature greenhouse is known as a cold frame. The interior of a greenhouse exposed to sunlight becomes significantly warmer than the external temperature, protecting its contents in cold weather.
Many commercial glass greenhouses or hothouses are high tech production facilities for vegetables, flowers or fruits. The glass greenhouses are filled with equipment including screening installations, heating, cooling, lighting, and may be controlled by a computer to optimize conditions for plant growth.
Sounds very high tech and modern but greenhouses, at least in concept, have been around for centuries.
The idea of growing plants in environmentally controlled areas has existed since Roman times.
One tale has it that the Roman emperor Tiberius ate a cucumber-like vegetable daily. The Roman gardeners used artificial methods (similar to the greenhouse system) of growing to have it available for his table every day of the year.
Today, tomatoes are the most common vegetables grown in greenhouses, followed by cucumbers. Both may be grown in the off-season to take advantage of premium prices.
The question we have is, are produce grown in environmentally controlled greenhouses better for us than those grown outside.
Some appear to think so. Please read on.
