November 4, 2021,
Just because you own it, doesn’t mean the description applies.
Just because it was given to you, it absolutely doesn’t apply.
It is not synonymous with earning it, though some people mistakenly think that it does.
When people say they deserve this or deserve that, sometimes our response to that is, says who?
Your trust Fund Manager?
Your rich deceased uncle?
What did you do to earn that? You certainly didn’t work for it.
This year’s Oscar Award? Many year’s Oscars for that matter. How many times have you watched an Oscar Recipient give their speech and you thought to yourself, this person did not deserve an Oscar for that performance.
Come on, be honest. How many times?
Merriam Webster Dictionary defines deserve as being worthy of, fit or suitable for some reward.
Or bad outcome.
Yes, sometimes bad.
At times, don’t some employees deserve to be fired? After stealing something. After engaging in clear sexual harassment. After getting in a fight. We know of a company that had a no tolerance policy against fighting. Even if you were employed there for decades.
We say all of this because in our circle there are a number of discussions about who deserves what.
As of this October 30, 2021 date, do the Cincinnati Bearcats deserve to be ranked number two in the country?
Their record is 7-0.
Yes, number two?
Here is the reasoning one of our associates used to declare that they don’t deserve that ranking.
Look at their schedule.
Let’s celebrate those victories they earned.
In 2021 they’ve played teams like Miami of Ohio, Murray State, Temple, UCF (do you know what that stands for?) and Navy, currently at 2-6. All respectfully speaking.
How does that schedule get you to be ranked number 2 in the United States?
Just asking.
By the way, they defeated Navy 27-20.
Give them some credit. They defeated a solid Notre Dame team 24-13.
So they are good. They are talented. They are exciting. They’ve got nice uniforms. Wonderful fans.
But are they great? Do they deserve to be designated that way?
The Oklahoma Sooners are ranked number 4 with a record of 7-0.
They have played and defeated Nebraska, West Virginia, Texas and TCU.
Pittsburgh is ranked number 17 with a record of 6-1.
They’ve defeated Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and Clemson.
Okay, just one more.
What if Cincinnati played in the mighty SEC and had to play teams like Florida, LSU, Texas A&M, Alabama, Auburn, Georgia and this year’s version of powerful Kentucky?
Do you really believe if they had that schedule that they would currently be undefeated?
The good news is that the college football playoffs will eventually determine who finishes number two.
We will see who deserves the rankings because they will have to earn it.
With victories against big schools.
Until we earn it, we should use the word deserve very carefully and we do want to focus on being deserving of something very positive.
In life, we hope to earn and deserve the incredible life partner we have, the beautiful house we live in, the incredible career that we have built and the fantastic life we live.
If we are not living that way, do we deserve to be in that position?
Of being disappointed?
Of not attracting the people we desire?
Of not making the money we want?
If we are not currently enjoying the wonderful aspects of life, how do we earn and live a better life we feel that we deserve?
There is an interesting book on Amazon that speaks to that.
You Deserve It: The Missing Answer To The Life You Want Paperback – September 13, 2019
by Dr. Josh Wagner (Author)
“Do you ever look around at friends, family, colleagues, or the people you grew up with and wonder why their lives appear to be more successful than yours?
Do you find yourself feeling at times you don’t quite measure up,
while others seem to be so happy and in control?
And no matter how many self-help books or therapists you try,
you’re still not getting the positive results you want in life...?
Until now.
In his groundbreaking book, YOU DESERVE IT, renowned international speaker and mindset coach
Dr. Josh Wagner reveals an incredibly simple new pathway to fulfillment. His pioneering work demonstrates how unconscious undeserving beliefs are the obstacle standing in the way of your goals, happiness and peace of mind.
“Your reality is a reflection of what you believe you deserve in life,” he says, having compared the thought patterns of the highest achievers to those who struggle.
Here, Dr. Wagner leads you through his revolutionary 3-step Deserving Process, combining clear explanations, doable action steps and practical exercises to move you through life’s toughest challenges to achieving your biggest dreams.
He also offers real-life accounts of people who have transformed their lives by shifting their ingrained deserving beliefs. And he wants you to have this too.
What better time to start your same journey than now?”
Great thoughts.
You should always feel that you deserve more in life.
In our opinion, that is the starting place. If you allow yourself to fall into the rut of feeling others deserve a better life than you because they are better looking, have connections, make more money, date gorgeous people and have a much better job, the ability to change all of those things and more start with simply asking yourself a direct question.
One at a time. Spend time developing the answer.
How can I become better looking (hint, the gym)?
How do I develop better social connections which often leads to work connections (hint, actively join clubs and organizations)?
How do I add to my resume so I can apply for better jobs?
Simply put, don’t leave anything on the field. Do everything that you possibly can to improve your situation. Make sacrifices and take steps to earn it.
So much of life is about dreaming big and taking the steps to get there.
The Cincinnati Bearcats have been dreaming big for a long time.
They haven’t arrived at upper echelon status over night. They have had great football teams for some time. Too, they can only play the schedule that is front of them.
What we deserve to have in life?
The playing field, our efforts and sacrifices will decide that.
