What is the speed that a woman new to wrestling can travel at to become proficient and successful at fully competitive female grappling?
It depends.
If you see competition as a form of battle, we can look to the Romans and the classic Film Ben Hur.
As the ship’s cruel Roman leader comfortably looked down the galley at the unfortunate slaves rowing he would casually order:
Battle Speed.
Attack Speed.
Ramming Speed.
In warfare, ramming is a technique used in air, sea, and land combat.
The term originated from battering ram, a siege weapon used to bring down fortifications by hitting it with the force of the ram's momentum.
Have you ever seen how powerful male rams with huge wide horns ram one another?
Apparently a Roman farmer was out in his field one day, saw two male rams charging one another and thought, where is Invent-Help when you need it.
Navies in antiquity commonly used the ram or beak as an important part of the armament of the galleys of Imperial Rome.

You might disagree if you are stuck rowing in the belly of a Roman fighting ship.

The headlock.
And one basic discipline.
Jiu-jitsu.
Whether it is Invicta or UFC, when you look at the rosters of both elite female grappling and fighting venues, they virtually all have Jiu-jitsu training.
One sterling example that stood out to us is Raquel Pennington.
Raquel Len Pennington is an American mixed martial artist who competes in Ultimate Fighting Championship women's bantamweight division.
She has previously fought for Invicta Fighting Championships. As of December 20, 2021, she is #7 in the UFC women's bantamweight rankings.
Ms. Pennington grew up playing many sports from basketball, softball, volleyball, running cross country, to always wanting to box.
She started training in martial arts at the age of 19.
She fought in amateur MMA from 2009 to 2011, amassing a record of 7 wins and 1 loss with five of those wins by submission. Her professional debut was in March 2012, a TKO victory against Kim Couture.

You’ll be at ramming speed before you know it.
We have a visiting writer who will share some ideas about learning Jiu-jitsu.
Jiu Jitsu Gi Techniques - The Basic Concepts
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu differs from its counterparts of Judo and Taekwondo in that the majority of the art is ground work. This means that the fighting is on ground level, learning how to immobilize your opponent, all be it that they are twice your own size.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was derived by Gracie, in Brazil in the early twentieth century, after a large immigrant population of Japanese arrived in Brazil. It was then recognized as a separate sport and given full recommendation up to world class levels. As Bjj works on ground work, the Gi is not as loose as the Judo or Taekwondo uniform, as a loose fitting garment could proof impractical when using ground grappling techniques.
The Jiu Jitsu Gi worn for Bjj comes in many colors, although the two recognized colors are blue and white. The Jiu Jitsu Gi is available in single or multiple weave, the stronger double weave being more durable, but impeding movement, and being unsuitable in hot climates.
It must be remembered when learning the martial art of Jiu Jitsu, that it is a sport of self control, defense, and well being, giving a focus to youths up to adults, and the capability to defend themselves against an opponent much bigger than themselves.
Jiu Jitsu techniques are 90% floor techniques, including ground grappling, locks and chokes. It must be remembered that these moves are potentially dangerous to someone inexperienced, and that you should not try to do these movements without instruction from a professional, and not try to copy examples you see on the television or Internet. If you hold an interest in the martial art, you should enroll in a class or club, where you will be instructed on the correct use of techniques, by qualified instructors with many years experience.
Techniques for Jiu Jitsu can be categorized into positions, transitions, Escapes, arm locks, chokes and leg logs. Positions include mounts and guards, transitions concentrating on sweeps and grapples, and escapes as the name suggests the escape from positions such as head locks and upper lift escapes.
Arm locks, chokes and head locks all immobilize your opponent, leaving them unable to move. Given the right timing of your movement, you can tear someone of twice your size to the ground, locking them in a position using arm or legs, from which they are unable to escape, regardless of their size, weight, or strength, as they are literally locked into position, unable to move.
All techniques should be learned from a qualified instructor, and if practiced at home, should be done so with great care, as one foul move could result in the breaking of bones of your practice opponent. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques are excellent for youngsters to learn who are lacking in confidence, or have experienced bullying, giving them the confidence to use their moves and positions when necessary. However, to move up in bjj belts rankings you must train with the Jiu Jitsu Gi.
What must be controlled very vigilantly, especially with youngsters, is that they do not abuse their knowledge of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, them becoming the bully against a harmless individual. In teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, alongside the techniques, is taught self discipline, giving the youths of today goals aims and a purpose.
