March 7, 2022,
Why are their Instructors always smiling?
What are they so happy about?
Dancing has a way of doing that for you.
References to dance can be found in very early recorded history.
For example Greek dance is referred to by Plato, Aristotle, Plutarch and Lucian.
The Bible and Talmud refer to many events related to dance, and contain over 30 different dance terms. In Chinese pottery as early as the Neolithic period, groups of people are depicted dancing in a line holding hands and the earliest Chinese word for "dance" is found written in the oracle bones.
It appears, at least in one area among many, our early ancestors were very wise to participate in dance.
Dancing is not hard on your body. It has numerous benefits for your heart and cardiovascular system.
It can also be very good for you mentally as well.
As shared by webmd.com, “Dancing offers plenty of benefits for your emotions, intelligence, and relationships. Dancing can improve your mood while you learn, move, and perform. In fact, many people take dance classes because they put them in a good mood.”
Go ahead and just say it.
Dancing brings a smile to your face. It really does.
The legendary Nat King Cole sang about it with style. As always.
Smile, though your heart is aching
Smile, even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrows
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You see the sun come shining through for you
Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although our tears may be ever so near
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile
Dancing gives you great reason to smile, especially if you participate in Jazzercise.
We sense you’ve heard of it. This fitness genre has been around for decades.
Jazzercise is a fitness franchise company founded by Judi Sheppard Missett in 1968 and headquartered in Carlsbad, California, United States.
Jazzercise combines dance, strength and resistance training with popular music for a full-body workout class. The company currently has over 8,300 franchisees worldwide in 32 countries.
Very impressive. No doubt with participants smiling everywhere.
Here is how it all got started.
Ms. Judi Sheppard Missett created Jazzercise in Evanston, Illinois in 1968 as a student at Northwestern University.
She was teaching at a dance studio and noticed her classes had high dropout rates.
Time to re-evaluate.
Realizing students were attending for physical fitness and not to become highly technically proficient in dance, Shepard Missett began to hold "just for fun" classes that began with a jazz warmup.
Bright idea.
These classes were eventually renamed "Jazzercise."
Jazz dance came relatively late into Missett's life-in 1966, just after she graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in theater and dance. She signed up to study with renowned jazz choreographer Gus Giordano at his Evanston studios.
To be the best, it is great to learn from the best.
Ever determined, Judi’s family moved to Carlsbad, California, where she taught classes in local rec centers.
Jazzercise quickly took off in San Diego and Sheppard Missett trained new instructors herself.
Many of those first instructors were in military families, so as they moved around the country, and the world, new populations were continually introduced to the program.
Now we understand, in part, how Jazzercise spread far and wide.
Initially using VHS videos, Judi was able to train franchisees from a distance and began to sell franchise rights for Jazzercise studios across the country.
In addition to the franchised classes, Judi produced recorded Jazzercise programs for home use, starting with an impressive LP entitled “Jazzercise” in 1981 which was certified gold in 1982.
She has impressed individuals, groups and companies the world over.
The team at Inc. Magazine smiles, “At age 75, Judi Sheppard Missett is still dancing, still teaching, and still CEO of Jazzercise, the ur-dance-fitness company she founded and that celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Jazzercise today is a $100 million business with more than 8,500 franchisees, and it cracked the Inc. 5000 in 2010, at the ripe age of 41.”
Well, age is just a number. 41 years is a great number.
Jazzercise has helped thousands of women become business owners, some of whom have successfully launched multiple studios to teach the program.
Would you be interested in becoming a franchise owner yourself? Judi is offering a very inspiring book on Amazon.
