Living The Van Life Fulltime, An Incredible Rich Adventure

April 23, 2022,

Road Trip fantasies are the stuff Van Life is made of.

Many have had great experiences doing so. Saved a ton on money too.

On vacation. Sometimes permanently.

Today we would like to take a look at living a Van Life fulltime.

We’ve seen numerous online videos of how singles and couples try and make a go of it, many with great success and endless adventures, living and traveling in their vans.

There are two ladies who seem to be making a great go of it. Let’s look into their life.

Meet Crystal and Jazman, Van Wives.

The two young women have traveled throughout Canada, the United States, Mexico and Guatemala.

Impressive.

They had a dream and the van cost them a total of $22,000 to convert and make it fully functional. What was even more exceptional is the couple performed the conversion while working fulltime, making the most of their evenings and weekends.

We can guess, when they approached their employers and gave notice, the huge smiles that were planted on their faces.

On to their new life.

Much of their time is spent camping, hiking, finding new waterfalls and blessing their dogs, allowing them to roam free in the great outdoors.

In terms of the internal makeup of their living space from electricity, heating, cooling, cooking, relaxing, storage and bedding, they have absolutely creatively and effectively figured it all.

What a dream life.

Then there is Van Life, living in cities like San Francisco.

While it lasts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4i1FpcGzvU

The gentleman here goes into great detail on how you can work in San Francisco, save money and live in your van space.

Seriously folks, you should check out his strategies to live a fantastic city life, living in your Van.

Here is what one reader had to say, “Hi Evan, I've been living in my van for almost 4 years now and I'm not looking back. This video is 100% accurate I must say. Most people fall for that unrealistic "vanlife" lifestyle sold on social media. You forgot to mention how important it is to have a good insurance policy. I know people who lost their home on wheels after an accident and had nowhere to go. We are way more vulnerable to disaster events than a normal housing option. I also keep a spare key in a hidden locker box attached to my van. It save me many times after locking the keys inside the van. Thanks for the awesome content.”

Good point about the insurance and the hidden locker room.

Time to travel. Let’s go to the movies.

Nomadland is a 2020 American drama film written, produced, edited and directed by Chloé Zhao.

Based on the 2017 nonfiction book Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century by Jessica Bruder, it stars Frances McDormand as a widow who leaves to travel around the United States in her van as a nomad.

David Strathairn also stars in a supporting role. A number of real-life nomads appear as fictionalized versions of themselves, including Linda May, Swankie and Bob Wells.

Here is the storyline.

In 2011, Fern loses her job after the US Gypsum plant in Empire, Nevada shuts down.

She worked there for years along with her husband, who recently died.

Fern sells most of her belongings and purchases a van to live in and travel the country searching for work. She takes a seasonal job at an Amazon fulfillment center through the winter.

Linda, a friend and co-worker, invites Fern to visit a desert rendezvous in Arizona organized by Bob Wells, which provides a support system and community for fellow nomads. Fern initially declines, but changes her mind as the weather turns cold and she struggles to find work in the area. There, Fern meets fellow nomads and learns basic survival and self-sufficiency skills for the road.

Wonderful. Now the real adventure begins.

Nomadland premiered on September 11, 2020, at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the Golden Lion. It also won the People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. It had a one-week streaming limited release on December 4, 2020, and was distributed by Searchlight Pictures in selected IMAX theaters in the United States on January 29, 2021, and simultaneously in theaters, and streaming digitally on Hulu, on February 19, 2021.

Time for an applause.

The film was a box office success, grossing $39 million worldwide against its $5 million budget and received widespread critical acclaim for its direction, editing, screenplay and cinematography, as well as the performances of McDormand and Strathairn.

At the 93rd Academy Awards, it won Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for Ms. McDormand, from a total of six nominations.

Incredible.

Now for a good read.

Nowhere for Very Long: The Unexpected Road to an Unconventional Life Hardcover – April 5, 2022

By Brianna Madia (Author)

In this beautifully written, vividly detailed memoir, a young womanchronicles her adventures traveling across the deserts of the American West in an orange van named Bertha and reflects on an unconventional approach to life

“A woman defined by motion, Brianna Madia bought a beat-up bright orange van, filled it with her two dogs Bucket and Dagwood, and headed into the canyons of Utah with her husband. Nowhere for Very Long is her deeply felt, immaculately told story of exploration—of the world outside and the spirit within.

However, pursuing a life of intention isn’t always what it seems. In fact, at times it was downright boring, exhausting, and even desperate—when Bertha overheated and she was forced to pull over on a lonely stretch of South Dakota highway; when the weather was bitterly cold and her water jugs froze beneath her as she slept in the parking lot of her office; when she worried about money, her marriage, and the looming question mark of her future. But Brianna was committed to living a life true to herself, come what may, and that made all the difference.

Nowhere for Very Long is the true story of a woman learning and unlearning, from backroads to breakdowns, from married to solo, and finally, from lost to found to lost again . . . this time, on purpose.”

Getting lost on purpose. A novel concept, especially if your previous or current life is not working for you.

It is important to do your homework first. That’s why we listed some examples of those successfully living the Van Life here.

Life is about choices and options and sometimes about making lemonade from lemons.

Are you open to a new adventure and possibly new way of life that offers you both challenges and freedom?

Smile.

You just might consider Van Life.

If so, best wishes on your new adventure.
