Newer Female Submission Grapplers, Learn Aikido, Defend, Protect And Win

May 1, 2022,

So much of how you view Aikido is based upon why you have made a decision to become a fully competitive female grappler.

If you are engaging in female combat because you are angry, learning Aikido is most likely not for you. There are countless other disciplines and pathways to learn to take out your aggression.

If you are getting into wrestling, for the right reasons, to compete, push yourself, exceed your limits and enjoy spirited competition without hurting your opponent, you really should learn Aikido.

Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art that is split into many different styles, including Iwama Ryu, Iwama Shin Shin Aiki Shuren Kai, Shodokan Aikido, Yoshinkan, Renshinkai, Aikikai and Ki Aikido.

Aikido is now practiced in around 140 countries.

It was originally developed by Morihei Ueshiba, as a synthesis of his martial studies, philosophy and religious beliefs.

Mr. Ueshiba's goal was to create an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attackers from injury.

According to the founder's philosophy, the primary goal in the practice of aikido is to overcome oneself instead of cultivating violence or aggressiveness.

Isn’t real change and improvement always about self?

Today, Aikido is found all over the world in a number of styles, with broad ranges of interpretation and emphasis. However, they all share techniques formulated by Mr. Ueshiba and most have concern for the well-being of the attacker.

As a newer female wrester, the primary way to learn this higher discipline is to research your local Dojo’s and Martial Arts studios online and find a suitable learning environment in your local area.

You might want to supplement or research it ahead of time through reading about it.

Here are two sources.

“Aikido is an ancient Japanese martial art based on natural body movements and the unity of mind and body, which restrain or throw opponents by utilizing the power of their own energy. Illustrated step-by-step sequences demonstrate postures, movements, pins, falls and throws, showing both solo and paired exercises. A perfect guide for both beginners and experienced practitioners.”

Very good.

Let’s view another book source.

The Aikido Student Handbook: A Guide to the Philosophy, Spirit, Etiquette and Training Methods of Aikido Paperback – Illustrated, December 9, 1993

By Greg O'Connor(Author)

“In the past twenty years, the Aikido population has increased tremendously in the United States, primarily because of the vast number of comprehensive American instructors. Greg O'Connor walks the reader through the history and philosophy of aikido. He then, in short chapters peppered with photos and illustrations, answers common questions about etiquette, training methods, and, in general, "what to expect" when practicing aikido.”

Well said.

Time for a video that we liked. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMHuX6Pu92M

Hope you absorbed all of that.

We now have a visiting writer who is happy to add to your Aikido learning menu.

Aikido Holds and Locks

Aikido locks will give you the ability to take control of your attacker fast! Using Aikido holds you can develop the ability to stop any aggressor in their tracks, and take command of a difficult situation.

Aikido is a Japanese martial art that uses the principle of non-resistance to reduce the strength of an attacker. Using very little of your own muscle power, it relies on the force of your opponent to easily off-balance, control, pin or throw them.

By developing practical skills to apply Aikido locks in an efficient way, you can reduce any injury to yourself, and your attacker. An Aikido hold is one of the best, and most ethical way to deal with aggressive behaviour.

Hiji-Jime is an Aikido lock that takes control of an attacker's elbow. This can help you hold an attacker down on their knees, as when they try to rise up, the pressure will cause pain in the elbow joint. This is often used by police forces and security to walk someone away from a location.

Ikkyo is a way to completely off-balance an attacker. With pressure on the elbow, while controlling the wrist, it is easily possible to break the balance and take your attacker to the ground. Then by continuing to control the elbow, you can pin them to the ground.

Nikyo is an Aikido hold that can be applied quickly from almost any type of grab. Control is achieved by causing extreme pain, without injury. Your attacker will try to move away from the pain, which will force them down to their knees and then face down on the floor.

Sankyo can force your attacker up on their toes, in an effort to reduce the pain involved. From here it is fairly easy to break their balance and take them down to their knees and face down on the floor. You can use this against many different attacks.

Yonkyo is an Aikido pressure point hold that focuses energy into the wrist. Once again the pain causes an attacker to attempt to move away from it. You are then able to use this movement to take control of them.

Kote Gaeshi is a wrist control technique that will force your attacker to sit down and you can then roll them onto their front. By placing an attacker lying on their front you have effectively removed all of their potential weapons of attack, which helps you to quickly control a situation.

There are many more Aikido Holds and locks that are available to you, and I recommend you get involved in some serious Aikido training to practise them. With a little practise you will also learn how to move correctly with the timing needed for a very effective application.

Of course, in a real street attack situation, it is likely to be fast, violent and frightening, so you will need to practise staying calm. You are more likely to have a surge of adrenaline in these circumstances, which will cause you to do one of three things...

1 - Freeze on the spot with fear, and possibly get hurt.

2 - Run away, to get out of the situation... a good idea!

3 - Use your skills, efficiently and effectively to take control.

If you are unsure of your abilities, please remember that it is far better to be realistic than badly hurt. You can train in a way that will help you to develop the right strategy and skills for a difficult situation. In this way you will develop confidence and learn to project the right attitude that tends to keep trouble away.
