PFL Partners With Mercury To Create NFT Platform, Digital Collectibles

May 14, 2022,

How often do you pull for the underdog?

Well, it depends. Right?

After losing four fights in a row, over the course of several years, Olena Kolesnyk definitely qualified as an underdog before she fought young Abigail Montes, who before the fight was 3-0, and getting a lot of hype.

Deservedly so.

Here is what created a lot of the hype.

As reported by ESPN, “Claressa Shields has suffered the first defeat of her professional fighting career. In her second MMA bout, Shields, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in boxing, was outpointed by Abigail Montes via split decision on Wednesday at Hard Rock Live.”

How long ago had it been since Ms. Shields lost?

The year was 2012.

So, Abigail defeating her was huge.

Abigail is only 22 years old.

Virtually everyone expected Abigail to defeat Olena, who was on a four bout slide.

Some were kind.

As posted by mmasucka.com, “Former Invicta FC fighter Olena Kolesnyk returns for her second straight season, and will be looking for her first win in the promotion against Abigail Montes, who rose to prominence after defeating boxing champion Claressa Shields last year at PFL 10 2021.”

Olena would go on to win over Abigail in a split decision.

This is what we love about the PFL.

They are the new kid on the block, admittedly a very big kid, with a very big appetite, but they are attracting great female talent, partnering with powerful media outlets and promoting some intriguing offerings.

Have you heard of NFT?

Not NFL. NFT. Here goes.

A non-fungible token (NFT) is a financial security consisting of digital data stored in a blockchain, a form of distributed ledger.

The ownership of an NFT is recorded in the block chain, and can be transferred by the owner, allowing NFTs to be sold and traded.

NFTs typically contain references to digital files such as photos, videos, and audio.

Because NFTs are uniquely identifiable, they differ from cryptocurrencies, which are fungible. The market value of an NFT is associated with the digital file it references.

Now for emphasis, fungible is something, such as money or a commodity, of such a nature that one part or quantity may be replaced by another equal part or quantity in paying a debt or settling an account.

When item A is fungible and so are items B, C, D, E and F; you can’t tell them apart.

Here, non-fungible means they are completely unique.

That make sense?

For clarification, the business leaders at Forbes explain, “An NFT is a digital asset that represents real-world objects like art, music, in-game items and videos. They are bought and sold online, frequently with cryptocurrency, and they are generally encoded with the same underlying software as many cryptos.”

They add and research also indicates that NFTs are gaining in popularity because they are becoming an increasingly sought after way to buy and sell digital artwork.

The NFT market grew dramatically from 2020–2021: the trading of NFTs in 2021 increased to more than $17 billion, up by 21,000% over 2020's total of $82 million.

Mind boggling.

We are still trying to wrap our brain around crypto currency, which to us, is like trying to put a blue ribbon on and wind and lightning sandwich.

Not for the faint of heart.

And guess what?

The innovative PFL has skin in the game.
