Newer Female Wrestlers, To Be Victorious, Master The Three Major MMA Chokes

July 6, 2022,

Recently we read the contents of an article written by our associates at FCI Women’s Wrestling, where they reviewed a match in Europe between two female wrestlers of different sizes. At first glance, you would think the much larger wrestler would have an advantage but the fact that her smaller opponent was schooled in MMA chokes, the smaller girl took the taller one to school over and over in an impressive domination victory.

The MMA chokes that she applied made all of the difference.

A stronger wrestler can pull apart attempted arm bars and body scissors but when an effective MMA choke is applied, there is not much you can do but tap out.

Let’s review three of them.

The rear naked choke (RNC) is a chokehold in martial arts applied from behind an opponent's back.

The choke has two variations. In one version, the attacker's arm encircles the opponent's neck and then grabs their own biceps on the other arm. In the second version, the attacker clasps their hands together instead after encircling the opponent's neck.

Recent studies have shown that the rear-naked choke takes an average of 8.9 seconds to render an opponent unconscious regardless of the grip that is used.

The guillotine choke, also known as the "front naked choke", in judo, is a chokehold in martial arts applied from in front of the opponent, often on the ground but can also be done while standing.

The choke involves using the arms to encircle the opponent's neck in a fashion similar to a guillotine.

The technique is either a type of tracheal compression restraint that prevents air flow to the lungs, or a blood choke depending on how and where pressure is applied, the trachea versus arteries respectively.

It can be applied both standing and from the ground, and can be used as a defense against a double leg takedown.

When executed from the ground, the person applying it will try to control the opponent by the hips, for instance using a closed guard.

This is done to prevent the opponent from escaping the hold, and to be able to apply additional pressure by extending the hips. It is a very effective maneuver when performed correctly.

A triangle choke, is a type of figure-four chokehold that encircles the opponent's neck and one arm with the legs in a configuration similar to the shape of a triangle.

Applying pressure using both legs and the opponent's own shoulder, the technique is a type of lateral vascular restraint that constricts the blood flow from the carotid arteries to the brain, potentially resulting in loss of consciousness in seconds when applied correctly.

Recent studies have shown that the triangle choke takes an average of 9.5 seconds to render an opponent unconscious from the moment it is properly applied.

As you can see, taking a little longer than the rear naked choke.

There you have it. Those are the big three.

In our experience, the rear naked choke is by far the most effective in obtaining submissions.

As a newer female wrestler, if you learn these chokes, along with mastering the basic headlock, the level of effectiveness in your wrestling game with increase dramatically.

We always love the second opinion of experts, so let’s walk over to the book and video store where you can learn from one of the best.
