January 25, 2023,
A New Year is often a reminder of new goals.
Expand upon what you have in your portfolio.
If you are a female grappler, this is a reminder of what should go in the basic arsenal of a fully competitive female submission wrestler, step by step.
Hone these down and you will be ready to expand upon new goals but try and perfect the basics first.
Time for some basics.
Step number one is to be in great shape.
We have studied many female wrestling videos over the last three decades and we can’t say enough how stamina and endurance plays a major part in victory.
You might want to put your walking shoes on because we are going to visit the experts at the bookstore.
101 Get-Lean Workouts and Strategies for Women (101 Workouts) Paperback – November 30, 2012
By Muscle & Fitness hers (Author)
“With programs that are clearly explained, easy to follow, and, best of all, proven to be effective at burning more calories and body fat, this workbook enables women to achieve firm, healthy, strong bodies. Readers are introduced to numerous forms of working out—from barbells and dumbbells to machines and elastic bands—so that they never grow bored or complacent with the routines.
This resource also includes complete meal plans that are designed by some of the country’s best nutritionists, as well as a collection of recipes that are both healthy and delicious.”
We like that.
It sounds simple yet comprehensive and easy to follow.
Step two, we’ll focus on building muscle.
You can be fit and in great shape but ultimately competitive wrestling is what it is.
You need to out muscle your opponent.
You need to be strong to grab their wrists and pull them forward
You need to be stronger than them to push them backwards.
You need to have strong upper body strength to take them down to the mats. Once there, you need to be stronger than them to keep them there.
Down underneath you for a pin.
We have seen extensive video where two women have comparable skillsets but the stronger one will invariably out muscle the other one.
Time to build those muscles.

Wonderful. We are feeling stronger already. This might be a good fit for you.
Whether it is the girls freestyle world, the competitive female submission wrestling industry or the women professional wrestling exhibitions in the squared circle, there is something that all of these female divisions have in common during the match.
The headlock is the basic wrestling hold.
Those of us who follow the sport know that.
Securing the hold is a whole other matter.
How many determined female grapplers have gotten their opponents into headlocks, only to lose the hold and eventually lose the match?
Do you want to master the most basic and important hold in wrestling?
Let’s get some expert advice.
Short Offense: Scoring from the Front Headlock
“Learn unique twists on common techniques for executing the front headlock!
- Learn 10 different ways to score from a front headlock

- Learn Coach Hahn's special gator roll for scoring in Freestyle and Greco competition
with Damion Hahn,
South Dakota State Head Coach
former Cornell University Associate Head Coach;
2017 EIWA Champions - 11 consecutive EIWA Conference Championships (2007-17);
2x NCAA Champion and 4x All American (University of Minnesota)
The front headlock is a common position that, when mastered, can be used to score big points against even the best wrestlers. In this video, Damion Hahn covers 10 different moves that are set up by the front headlock. The moves build on each other and can be used to counter your opponent's movements. Coach Hahn gives insider advice with insightful tidbits that are critical to success.
Coach Hahn covers set-ups as well as several other effective finishes. He continues with a series of finishes from the feet and concludes with showing his "gator roll" that can counter the typical roll for scoring in Freestyle and Greco.”
After this great read, we feel confident you can master the most basic and vital wrestling move, the headlock.
We also want to emphasize from our experience, it is important to secure the headlock when you are on top. Capturing a headlock from the bottom places you in a position of weakness. If your opponent breaks the hold and you are on the bottom, they can smother and submit you easily.
If you secure the headlock from the top, and they break the hold, you can quickly maneuver them into another potential submitting hold.
Say it to yourself over and over. Secure your headlocks from the top position. Not the side. And especially not the bottom.
Some good reminders.
Get fit. Get strong. Learn the most basic wrestling move.
Do that and you can start off your New Year with some impressive victories on the female grappling mats.
