Female Grapplers, Strengthen Your Thighs For Powerful Scissor Combination Submissions

February 21, 2023,

The answer is as old as the hills.

The question is not a new one though, especially in the fully competitive female submission wrestling industry.

How can you build strong leg and thigh muscles to forcefully and effectively apply those painful and often inescapable body scissors?

Performing squats, working on the leg press machine at the gym and applying yourself at the leg curl machine is a great start and, speaking of the hills, running some hills can help tremendously.

We live near and have resided in the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area where there are hills galore. As a result, San Francisco has acquired another famous name.

Several cities claim to have been built on seven hills. "The Seven Hills of San Francisco" are Telegraph Hill, Nob Hill, Russian Hill, Rincon Hill, Twin Peaks, Mount Davidson and Lone Mountain or Mount Sutro.

They are a sight to see and are effective in building your leg muscles if you decide to walk them. Yes, it is a day trip but trust us, it is better than driving your car on them and straining your transmission.

Strain your thigh muscles instead.

When visiting the legendary Chinatown, a friend of ours never parks in a parking lot near the famous locale. Instead she parks at the top of a major hill and walks down, knowing later she will get a great leg and thigh workout by walking back up.

Let’s walk with her.

Hopefully there is a bookstore along the way.

Two internationally recognized fitness experts wrote this book for those who want to enhance athletic performance as well as body aesthetics.

There's also an entire chapter dedicated to showing you how to design your own program. Whether strength, athletic fitness, or fat burning is your goal, you'll look better, feel better, and perform better with Stronger Legs and Lower Body.”

Impressive.

Our legs are feeling stronger already.

Lets’ take a closer look at what Keli Roberts has to offer.

At her energetic website keliroberts.com she educates, “Growing up in Australia, from a very early age I was active and involved in competitive sports. I especially loved swimming, track and field, Net Ball (like basketball, but with no back board and no dribbling) and synchronized swimming. After l left school, I worked as a model and actress in Australia and Europe but found the lifestyle very unhealthy and the work totally unsatisfying. Moreover, it also made me feel like I was never good enough! My modeling career left me with very low self-esteem.

After quitting modeling, I got certified to teach fitness through ACHPER, Australia’s top fitness certification and I soon began teaching classes. Initially, I was teaching as a means to attend theater school, but I soon found out that I was happiest teaching fitness classes. So, I dropped out of theater school and thrust myself full-time into the fitness industry. I had found my true passion – teaching fitness!

After several years of teaching in Australia and New Zealand, I decided to move to America to continue my exercise education and take the ACE certification for Group Exercise and Personal Training as well as the AFAA certification. After passing all of my exams I began teaching at Voight Fitness which was “The Place” to teach at that time and it was through my classes there that I built my personal training clientele.

Within a few months I found myself teaching some of Hollywood’s elite. My group fitness classes had such celebrities as Nicole Kidman, Janice Dickinson, Beverly Johnson, Lauren Hutton and Jennifer Grey. My personal training clientele included Cher, Kirstie Alley, Jennifer Gray, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Susan Dey and Faye Dunaway.”

That is quite a client list. If it works for the legendary Keli and them, it should work for you.

She adds, “Through my workshops, videos and manuals, it has been my goal to ensure that instructors learn to teach safe, effective and fun classes. I have taught workshops and master classes at conventions worldwide, including Brazil, UK, Japan, France, Germany, Mainland China and Hong Kong, Thailand, Portugal, Switzerland, Australia, Spain, Italy and Mexico.”

When you read her book, you get a global trainer to help you improve those legs and thighs.

In our industry, the body scissor has become very important in combination with other holds like the headlock, choke and arm bar. If you apply the latter holds alone, they are less effective in exacting a submission. If you apply it with your legs and thighs, fortified by safe squats, leg presses, leg curls and running some hills, believe it, your submissions will come faster and harder.

You are now ready to get off to a great start.

Great scissors will help you cut the mustard on those fully competitive grappling mats.

That advice is as old as the women wrestling hills.
