European Women’s Grappling, England Event, Alexis Luna Vs Angelina

Excitement is in the air whenever there is women’s fully competitive submission wrestling on tap.

Especially at an event. In the regal historic city of London.

The effort and intensity is always higher.

There is even more excitement when you have little information on the women involved and, you think you know who is going to win, but you are not sure.

As far as we know, we have never seen Alexis Luna wrestle and we have only one review in our library chronicling a match with Angelina.

For now, a mystery is afoot.

In London, there’s nothing like a great mystery.

ALEXIS LUNA VS ANGELINA

They begin on their knees and both initiate hand fighting and wrist grabbing.

As expected.

Neither appears to have a clear plan so the jockeying for position goes on for at least a minute.

Finally Angelina breaks through, tugs at Alexis left thigh and takes her down, landing on top of her. (1:25).

They struggle a bit more as Alexis wisely traps Angelina’s right thigh to prevent a full mount and submission smother.

Alexis breaks the hold.

As the two continue to struggle, it is becoming clear that neither has a real plan. They go from one hold to another, that is easily broken, and they start over.

While Angelina appears to have a little more experience, Alexis has the stronger body, in particular muscular thighs that speak to working out in the gym. In a match between two moderately skilled wrestlers, will experience win out over strength?

They continue to struggle around on the floor of the mats and Angelina gives up her back which presents an ideal opportunity for Alexis to pull her backwards in a rear naked choke and body scissor.

Alexis can’t quite execute the hold and Angelina breaks free.

The stronger girl keeps moderate control as she captures Angelina from the side with Angelina in a turtle position.

Alexis is able to capture Angelina’s right arm and thigh between her strong legs as she squeezes Angelina’s head for a possible submission.

Curiously she lets go and Angelina moves forward on top of Alexis for a potential smother. Instead, she slides to the side and traps Alexis in a headlock, with her body on top for leverage and squeezes.

FIRST SUBMISSION?

Could this be our first submission?

Alexis strength prevails and she breaks the hold then circles around Angelina for another potential rear naked choke.

Though Alexis is in the position of strength, from behind, she let’s go of any choke and eventually loses the hold.

The two athletes struggle some more until Angelina surprises with another headlock from the top. She squeezes but she doesn’t appear to be strong enough to secure the submission.

She loses the hold (6:55).

Alexis is fighting from the floor, using her strong legs as Angelina simply paws away at her without making a real move. This continues for some time until Alexis is back up on her knees.

They lie and sit around wondering what to do next.

Finally Angelina captures Alexis in a floor to sitting body scissors and embraces her, ready to squeeze her out. If Alexis breaks the hold, all she has to do is fall forward to place her in a position for a smother.

The two struggle without much progress.

Angelina now makes progress.

As Alexis moves forward to escape, Angelina grasps her right arm into a substantial arm bar and swings her left leg over Alexis head in a semi scissors to swing her down to the mats.

She does so effectively as Alexis upper torso slams down to the mats.

Angelina tightens the arm bar and squeezes.

That’s it. Alexis painfully taps out.

Angelina leads 1-0 (9:08).

Time for a small break as the women gather themselves and fix their hair.

TACTICS

They begin with upper hand fighting and clenches above the shoulder.

Alexis takes a very passive approach and waits for Angelina to take the action to her.

Questionable strategy but then again, she is new.

Angelina fills the void of aggression and happily snaps Alexis into a headlock and once again takes her down with a thud, while she smartly lands her body on top of her for leverage.

Alexis clearly works out at the gym and tries to use her strong legs to kick out of trouble.

She also has strong arm strength as she pries Angelina’s hands then arms apart and breaks a very tough hold.

The audience applauds.

Apparently Alexis is tiring as she stops play, wondering how much time is left.

There is still 4 minutes to go (11:40).

They slowly engage again with hand fighting.

Encircling one another.

Oddly, Angelina gives herself up and falls to the floor with her legs out to entice Alexis to come forward. Alexis obliges and falls into a floor to sitting body scissors. Angelina once again grabs her right arm and lifts her legs over, taking Alexis down to the mats in another arm bar, semi-scissors.

In pain, Alexis struggles and struggles but, to the applause of the audience, manages to break the hold.

Against another more experienced wrestler, Angelina’s falling to the floor tactics would get you mounted, often from the side with a cross body pin or, if from the front, a frontal smother.

We would not recommend the falling to the floor, legs out strategy.

Alexis finally breaks the hold and the audience applauds (13:00).

Now, if Alexis could only mount an offense herself.

They study one another and as they engage, Angelina takes Alexis down to the mats with a headlock and wisely lands on top. She keeps the position for some time but as they struggle, the two fall off the mats and must start over.

They engage again and Angelina almost takes her down but now time has truly expired.

The two hug and appreciate the competition they just had.

Alexis raises Angelina’s hand as the winner.

We would describe the match as competitive but among newer wrestlers, more similar to a sparring or training session.

Having said that, we enjoyed the match.
