Female Grapplers, Which Comes First, Developing Skills Or Strength?

April 7, 2023,

You’ve heard them before. Maybe you agree or disagree. See what you think.

It’s better to be lucky than good.

Don’t agree.

Luck runs out. Over time, being good at what you do strengthens your process, engagement or pathway. Longevity is on your side when you are good at what you do. Endurance pays off. The race or competition does not go to the swift but to the one who endures until the end.

Better to be feared than loved.

Strongly disagree.

Love covers a multitude of sins. One of our associates who was a leader in an international organized religion found this out the hard way. He was respected and fairly strict by the book kind of leader and while many of the rank and filed feared him, they didn’t love him. They did respect him though. Having said that, once he made a big mistake, they had little sympathy for him since he had such high expectations of them.

We could go down the list on this one.

Does the kid grow up to love the loving parent more or the strict one who set down the rules?

Does the employee remain friends with the supervisor who was there for them when they had family or romance problems or the one who was by the book?

Here’s another.

It’s better to be safe than sorry?

Completely agree. This extends to the theory of haste makes waste. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Penny wise and pound foolish.

Remember, when it comes to what you say to others, protecting your security or using protection in romance, in our opinion, safe is always better than sorry.

Which brings us to your wrestling.

Is it better to have strength or skill?

If we had to pick one, we would say skills. Why?

During a match, if you are not fully conditioned, you will tire out and your strength will do you little good.

With skills, once you have certain skillsets, then you will have them. Whether it is at the beginning of the match, middle or later.

Learn your skills first.

Now the headlock is the most basic move you need to learn in wrestling. What is not often said is that, if you are going to apply a headlock, then you need to fall on the top of your opponent. Having one from the side, temporarily staves off your aggressive opponent. Having one form the bottom is useless and a detriment because once your opponent breaks that hold, they are right on top of you for the smother.

Remember, the headlock is the basic move but always apply it, then fall on top of your opponent.

To focus on the most important skill you need to learn in today’s fully competitive female submission wrestling industry is MMA, in particular, jiu-jitsu.

Lets’ walk over to the bookstore.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: The Ultimate Guide to Dominating Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Combat Paperback – Illustrated, November 10, 2012

By Alexandre Paiva (Author)

“Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a guide to the most efficient and devastating techniques in popular martial arts by World Champion and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend Alexandre Paiva.

The book contains over 1,000 full-color photographs demonstrating the moves that made the author the most feared competitor in BJJ circles and now one of the most sought-after instructors. Jiu-Jitsu or Jujutsu came into prominence in the early 90's when jiu-jitsu expert Royce Gracie won the first, second, and fourth Ultimate Fighting Championships against much larger opponents who were using other styles such as boxing, muay thai, karate, and wrestling. Since then it has become one of the most popular methods in MMA due to its focus on ground fighting.

Learn the techniques that have proven dominant in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments and the Mixed Martial Arts cage:

  • Takedowns
  • The Closed Guard
  • Passing The Closed Guard
  • Butterfly Guard
  • Open Guard Pass
  • Side Control
  • Half Guard
  • Back Mount

With sections devoted to both gi and no-gi techniques, whether training for a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament or a Mixed Martial Arts fight, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one book no true competitor can afford to miss.”

Based upon our research, when it comes to jiu-jitsu, Brazil is where it is at. That is why in the UFC, there are so many great female MMA fighters.

Now for an eye to strength.

It gets real simple. Develop your arm strength and the shoulders tend to follow. You will need that arm strength for headlocks and arm bars.

We’re going to the bookstore again.
