June 7, 2023,
The process is the same.
Or at least similar.
Decision making.
In real life, you can often take your time. Perhaps talk it over with others. Do some research and compare how others faired in the same situation.
Maybe even change your mind.
No such luck on the fully competitive female grappling mats.
When you make decisions there, you have to act quickly. Decisively with no hesitation.
There is no time for research or conferring with others. Mostly you are on your own. That being the case, perhaps we can come up with a plan ahead of time.
We’re going to go through a few situations that you may find yourself in and, based upon our extensive video research, see if we can come up with some decisions that can help increase your chances for victory.
Where should we start?
How about right at the beginning of the match.
You are both on your knees, ready to engage in hand fighting, arm grabbing and pushing.
The first important decision you need to make is how to get a headlock secured before she does.
That is critical. If you can grab her wrist or arms and “pull them towards you”, immediately try and secure the headlock.
The next important decision is to fall down on top of your opponent.
Not the side.
Certainly not the bottom.
Once on top, try and secure one of her arms with your thighs. This can move you into position for a cross body pin. That will place you in a position for a submission.
Let’s look at another “first decision” of engagement.
Question for you?
Which offensive move should you go for first? The arm bar or the body scissor?
Believe it or not, most female submission wrestlers go for the scissors first. It is not the greatest move for several reasons. The first reason is that most female submission wrestlers strongly work their Abs. They have developed strong armor around their waist.
You will rarely submit them with a body scissor.
The second reason the scissor is a weak move is because they still have two hands left to pry your scissor loose by the ankles.
After the headlock, your arm bar is the next best offensive move.
The most important reason for using this formidable hold is that it leaves your opponent only one arm to utilize to break free. Then, “now” is the time to apply that body scissor around their waist while you have one arm trapped.
They will most likely submit.
Learning the headlock is pretty straight forward. Learning how to apply an effective arm bar requires some training.
We think we have found an athletic lady who can teach you that technique well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnbmQRK-YK0
“Welcome to my vlog "Marjorie On The Mat"! I'm Marjorie De Vries and a total lover of all things Jiu-Jitsu. That's why I decided to do a vlog geared towards females for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. My goal is to show detail of techniques on the gym mats, and cover everything else from hair to tournament prep on my home mats. I am a blue belt under World Champion and Carlson Gracie Sr. black belt Miguel Angel Torres. I've competed in lots of BJJ tournaments, including: IBJJF Pan Ams, Worlds, World Masters, Chicago Open, NAGA, US Grappling and USBJJ. I'm part of Torres Martial Arts Academy's female team Valkyrie.”
Very impressive.
To apply arm bars effectively, you need to learn the total package of Jiu-Jitsu.

Jiu-Jitsu Strategies and Tactics for Self-Defense: When the Fight Goes to the Ground (Includes DVD) Paperback – Box set, October 3, 2017
By Lori O'Connell (Author), Steve Hiscoe (Foreword), Jennifer Weintz (Foreword)
“This instructional Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu book & DVD combo offers a complete guide to ground fighting principles and techniques to use when the fight goes to the ground.
In a street defense scenario, the ground is a dangerous place to be. While it's a good idea to learn defensive strategies for ground fighting, it is important to put those skills into the context of how you want to use them. Whether you're an experienced submission-grappling competitor, a traditional martial artist training in a stand-up striking style, or law enforcement professional, Ground Defense provides you with an essential system of self-protection for street-oriented ground scenarios.
Jiu-Jitsu Strategies and Tactics for Self-Defense: When the Fight Goes to the Ground establishes the risks and hazards of various ground defense scenarios, presenting effective strategies for neutralizing and minimizing them. You will learn a wide range of tools for defense, including the targeting of vital areas, body shifting/control techniques, and the concept of "weapons of opportunity." All of these techniques are easy to learn and apply, providing an adaptable skill set for anyone, regardless of size, strength or gender. These tools are then shown in various combinations, with examples of how to use them against specific types of attacks, including simple hold-downs, ground and pound, submission grappling pins, chokes, arm locks, leg locks, knife attacks and multiple assailant scenarios.
In addition, this martial arts book gives you useful training suggestions and regimens, addressing graduated skill development, challenges presented by different body types, and safety practices at all levels of training.”
Sounds very comprehensive.
This will get your knowledge of Jiu-Jitsu off to a great start.
Make the decision to follow through.
So much of how our lives turn out is about decision making. In real life, we have time to make good decisions.
On the mats, not so much.
You have to be decisive and quick, otherwise your opponent will beat you to the punch.
So that you stay ahead of their decision making, focus on perfecting the headlock and the arm bar. Two extremely effective offensive weapons that will immediately put your opponent on the defensive.
By deciding on this two prong approach, when it comes to your decision making on the fully competitive female grappling mats, your pathway to victory will be much easier.
