July 14, 2023,
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
Or was it Jill?
Didn’t they go up a hill together?
Training for fully competitive female grappling can be like climbing a hill. It is hard work. There is no way to get around that.
But does it have to be work? Can’t it be fun too?
Well, it depends upon what is at the top of the hill. For Jack and Jill, they went up there to fetch a pail of water. What is the crowning achievement for a female grappler to traverse up the hill?
Find a female wrestling camp at the top of the hill, with a beautiful view. When you think about it, it is the perfect blend of hard work, achievement and pleasure. Do these camps exist?
Sure they do.
Time to go on a trip and meet one of them.
This camp looks intriguing. We love their name. Grappling Getaways. Jiu-Jitsu Women Camps.
Let’s knock at their door.
At grapplinggetaways.com they educate, “In 2015, there were few women in upstate New York training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. In order to prepare for competitions April, and Julie organized training sessions and camps exclusively for women.”
Sounds innovative. Ahead of their time.
They add, “In the beginning we started with day camps and sleepovers. Quickly, we realized that there needs to be more time in order to share knowledge, spar and connect with each other. We didn't realize we had stumbled upon a "need" in our community of women. A need for training partners, female instruction and guidance, role models, friends and just some time away from home, family etc.”
Brilliant idea. Their goal is to mentor and usher in females to a community of acceptance, opportunity, support, guidance and life-long friendships.
Aren’t you loving this? We certainly are. And it does sound like fun. Especially the getaway part.
So, once you are there, what will your stay be like?
They provide luxury accommodations and complete vacation packages inclusive of world class Jiu-Jitsu instruction from some of the best instructors in the industry. They appear to having great global success.
Since their formation, they have hosted camps in Syracuse, Lake Placid, North Creek Durham, NY Rincon, Puerto Rico Nassau, Bahamas Spanish Wells, Bahamas Tamarindo, Costa Rica, Salem, Massachusetts, and Mexico City.
What a great idea.
Travel the world while you are trained to wrestle. If you have the funding, what a great way to go. Their goal is to build a network of women all over the world who support one another.
Sounds like a wonderful idea.
They certainly are impressing others. The team at wetravel.com express, “Grappling/Brazilian Jiu Jitsu travel business committed to bringing people high level instruction and invaluable memories/experiences through traveling the world!”
Here are a few reviews.
“The Back to the 80s Grappling Getaways was an amazing weekend filled with awesome training sessions, fun excursions in the Lake George area, an incredible lakeside house, and an amazing, welcoming, group of women! From the location, to the food, and training in the pavilion to all the thoughtful 80s themed goodies, gifts and treats, April and Katie went above and beyond. I was hesitant about joining this weekend adventure, especially as a fairly new white belt. I can’t express what an amazing experience this was for me and I can’t wait to be able to join another Grappling Getaways! You ladies rock!!”
One more.
“What a weekend!!! The accommodations were fabulous! Coffee on the dock with the light fog rolling in was just one of the many highlights of this trip. Everyone was friendly, outgoing, and our host Katie and April made sure everyone felt welcomed and included! The 80s theme was fantastic and everything was decorated so well. We even got swag bags 🙂 The training was also amazing. I learned new moves and new tweaks to moves that I had been doing for years. There is so much more I can say about this wonderful weekend! I feel energized about my jui jitsu again and have a whole new group of friends. So happy I got outside of box and joined this EPIC weekend!”
Are you ready to visit Upstate New York? The region where they are located? It is a beautiful area with so much to do.
Time for a visit.
Upstate New York is a geographic region consisting of the area of New York State that lies north and northwest of the New York City metropolitan area.
Major cities across Upstate New York from east to west include Albany, Utica, Binghamton, Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo.
Many of the features of Upstate New York landscapes, such as the Finger Lakes and the drumlins that dot the region, are the result of glaciers during the Ice Age.
Speaking of New State, the world travelers at lonelyplanet.com smile, “Natural landscapes, antique stores, challenging hikes and some of the best bakeries you’ll ever find – from one end of the state to another, New York is crammed with outdoor adventure, art, great food and friendly people, despite what you’ve heard.”
We thought as much.
The fantastic travel source theculturetrip.com adds, “Located in the Adirondack Mountains, the village of Lake Placid was listed in US News & World Report as one of the 6 Forgotten Vacation Spots in North America. Surrounded by natural beauty, Lake Placid is consistently popular among snow skiers, hikers and bikers.”
We’re convinced.
The Adirondack Mountains. Talk about going up a hill.
In Upstate New York, there is no need for Jack to be a dull boy. There is plenty to do and plenty to see, for you as well.
With your wrestling, our suggestion is to be creative. Don’t make it all work and no play.
There are actually a number of wonderful wrestling camps around the United States that cater to female grapplers.
So, if you are a newer female grappler, get ready to work, but along the way?
Visit a wrestling camp and have some scenic fun as well.
