San Francisco Dedicates This Year’s Fleet Week in Honor of Late Senator Dianne Feinstein

October 11, 2023,

We all need or traditions.

They serve important purposes, sometimes honoring people who contributed greatly to society.

San Francisco will dedicate the 2023 Fleet Week in honor of the late Senator Dianne Feinstein.

What is Fleet Week?

Time for a closer look.

Fleet Week is a United States Navy, United States Marine Corps, and United States Coast Guard tradition in which active military ships recently deployed in overseas operations dock in a variety of major cities for one week.

Once the ships dock, the crews can enter the city and visit its tourist attractions. At certain hours, the public can take a guided tour of the ships. Often, Fleet Week is accompanied by military demonstrations and air shows such as those provided by the Blue Angels.

For years it was common for several U.S. Navy ships to dock in San Francisco for a similar series of events.

One or more fleet ships were docked as a "visit ship" for tourists to board, and the local community took in sailors for home visits; drinks were often discounted to uniformed sailors at area bars and restaurants.

The highlight of the San Francisco Fleet Week is the Air Show on San Francisco Bay with the Blue Angels as the center of attention.

The Blue Angels, formally named the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, are a flight demonstration squadron of the United States Navy.

Formed in 1946, the unit is the second oldest formal aerobatic team in the world, after the French Patrouille de France formed in 1931. The team, composed of six Navy and one Marine Corps demonstration pilot, fly Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornets.

The Blue Angels typically perform aerial displays in at least 60 shows annually at 30 locations throughout the United States and two shows at one location in Canada.

The "Blues" still employ many of the same practices and techniques used in the inaugural 1946 season. An estimated 11 million spectators view the squadron during air shows from March through November each year. Members of the Blue Angels team also visit more than 50,000 people in schools, hospitals, and community functions at air show cities.

Since 1946, the Blue Angels have flown for more than 505 million spectators.

As of November 2011, the Blue Angels received $37 million annually from the annual Department of Defense budget.

The Air Show also features stunt planes and parachute team and coast guard demonstrations.

Another highlight of the Fleet Week SF is a parade of ships under the Golden Gate Bridge.

The team at fleetweeksf.org add, “San Francisco Fleet Week is an annual public event that honors the contributions of the men and women of the United States Armed Forces while advancing cooperation and knowledge among civilian- and military-based Humanitarian Assistance personnel.”

That is a great mission.

Sounds impressive and wonderful.

Senator Feinstein’s service is greatly appreciated.

San Francisco Dedicates This Year's Fleet Week in Honor of Late Senator Dianne Feinstein

In 1981, Mayor Feinstein welcomed the first Fleet Week to San Francisco, which has evolved into an annual tradition that draws thousands of visitors and residents to the City’s shoreline to enjoy and partake in week-long events and air shows

October 03, 2023

San Francisco, CA – Mayor London N. Breed, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and the San Francisco Fleet Week Association today announced this year’s San Francisco Fleet Week (SFFW) will be dedicated to the late Senator and former San Francisco Mayor Dianne Feinstein, who passed away last week. As the 38th Mayor of the City and County of San Francisco, she began this annual tradition in 1981, leading the nation in celebrating America’s sea services.

“As we dedicate this year’s San Francisco Fleet Week in honor of Senator Feinstein, we remember her contributions to San Francisco and our nation,” said Mayor London Breed. “For over four decades, Senator Feinstein’s foresight has provided our City the opportunity to welcome and celebrate those who serve and support our country. We are proud to continue this important tradition and thank our service members for their work and commitment to partnering with the first responders from our public safety departments to make sure San Francisco is prepared when a disaster strikes.”

“Since Dianne Feinstein began the tradition more than four decades ago, San Francisco Fleet Week has served as a glorious celebration of civic pride and patriotism in our City,” Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi said. “How fitting it is that, as our City pays tribute to Senator Feinstein’s towering legacy this week, we proudly dedicate this year’s Fleet Week in her honor.  She was a pillar of public service in San Francisco, who fought relentlessly for our families and our values from City Hall to Capitol Hill.  Dianne Feinstein will always be considered our Forever Mayor, and we will continue to honor her extraordinary life and leadership.”

In honor of Senator Dianne Feinstein, the Patriots Jet Team -- a civilian aerobatic formation team that performs in air shows across the western United States of America -- will fly over San Francisco at 12:57 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday to commemorate the late Senator’s contributions to San Francisco and the nation, prior to the 3 p.m. Blue Angels portion.

“The entire San Francisco Fleet Week community is saddened by the loss of our Honorary Co-Chair, Senator Dianne Feinstein,” said Lewis Loeven, Executive Director of the San Francisco Fleet Week Association. “Along with her incredible record of service to our country, the State of California and the City of San Francisco, Senator Feinstein was also the founder of San Francisco Fleet Week. With the creation of San Francisco Fleet Week, Senator Feinstein created a lasting community celebration that honors the fine people serving in our military. She was an active and enjoyable advocate for Fleet Week. Her enthusiastic participation in Fleet Week events will truly be missed.”

The 42nd Annual San Francisco Fleet Week celebration officially kicked off on Monday of this week and will close on Tuesday, October 10. More than 2,300 U.S. Marines and Sailors will join San Francisco-based U.S. Coast Guard during the 2023 Salute to our sea services and pay tribute to Senator Feinstein.

Fleet Week also coincides with another beloved City tradition – Italian Heritage Weekend. Combined, the SFFW's air show, the Parade of Ships, and many community events have become a significant and integral part of the City’s culture, economy, and tourism. SFFW also features a unique training and education program that brings together civilian and military forces to develop and share best practices in humanitarian assistance.
