June 14, 2024,
We’re certain you don’t take it for granted but as a newer female grappler, can you imagine what your life would be like, even temporarily, with an injured back.
Daily life.
Your wrestling is beside the point.
If you have ever suffered an injured back, it makes virtually all that you do miserable.
The respected team at mayoclinic.org express, “Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek medical help or miss work. Back pain is a leading cause of disability worldwide.”
Can be a pervasive problem and it certainly can postpone your wrestling.
Our back muscles help us move our body, bend over, rotate the trunk and stand up straight.
When it comes to your wrestling, having a flexible healthy back is vital.
As a female wrestler, try not to wrestle your opponent while they are on top of you and you are playing defense, on your back.
How did you get on your back?
Surprisingly, in our video reviews, time after time we have seen a female submission wrestler, in a somewhat weakened state because they fell to the floor and attempted a floor to sitting, kneeling or standing body scissor.
That move speaks to a thinking that, in hand to hand upper body combat, you don’t feel that you can win so there is an illusion that if you fall on your back and grasp them in a floor to sitting or standing body scissors that you are in control.
You are not.
The opponent often breaks the hold and she is instantly falling forward on top of you. Let’s face it, based upon gravity where else can she go. And please don’t let her be larger or stronger than you.
Now, she is on the offense and you have to desperately fight from your back.
The worst part?
You will tend to stay there until she submits you.
Where else are you going to go?
In one match, we saw a talented female wrestler spend 90 perfect of the time, with her back on the floor, while her opponent opened up the playbook to submit her. Naturally she lost the match.
The irony of that match.
The girl who lost was actually the stronger of the two. She previously defeated her in arm wrestling.
Stay off of your back. Strengthen it instead.
You cannot wrestle with a bad back.
The back comprises interconnecting nerves, bones, muscles, ligaments, and tendons, all of which can be a source of pain.
Next to headaches, back pain is the second most common type of pain in adults.
By far the most common cause of back pain is muscle strain.
The back muscles can usually heal themselves within a couple of weeks, but the pain can be intense and debilitating.
Very true.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Let’s check out a great video to help your back stay strong and healthy.

“5 MUST DO BACK EXERCISES | Honestly the best!”
This video is brought to by Krissy Cela of Fitness made simple.
Appreciate that Krissy.
How are you female grapplers feeling now? Better, we hope.
The back muscles are not glamorous. How many sexy photos have you seen of a top model sporting her back muscles? Abs, yes. Back muscles? Hardly.
Your back muscles may be likened to the linemen who fight it out in the trenches, helping to make sure that the other moving parts, often glamorized, perform their duty and get the glory.
Having said that, in terms of being sexy, the female back does have a place in history.
The curvature of the female back is a frequent theme in paintings, because the sensibilities of many cultures permit the back to be shown nude, implying full nudity without actually displaying it.
The practice of showing explicitness on the lower back has been performed for centuries.
We always love a little history but today, we are looking at being practical.
If you are a newer female submission wrestler, strengthening your back muscles are critical.
We’re going to offer more help.
We have featured fitness Holly Dolke before. For good reason.
