Female Athletes, Wrestlers, For Hydration, Water Is Great, Wellness Drinks Can Be Fun, Here Is A New One

October 1, 2024,

You are what you eat.

You’ve heard that one before. Have to admit, sometimes we wish it wasn’t true. Especially if you were raised with a completely delicious American Southern diet. Yummy BBQ and fried foods that have you fulfilled and dreaming for days.

Goes wonderfully with dessert.

But that diet, is just that, a dream.

But you know what, not only are we what we eat, a line of reasoning could be that we are what we drink as well.

Big time.

Water is of course the best. Nature’s gold for your body. Through hydration and removal of wastes, water is the best.

As a female submission wrestler and athlete, how expansive is your beverage variety? Hopefully it is primarily of the wellness variety.

You might be consuming these, so let’s start with the drinks that science cautions us about.

A functional beverage is a conventional liquid food marketed to highlight specific product ingredients or supposed health effects.

They tell you they are healthy, but are they?

Beverages marketed as "functional" include dairy drinks, sports and performance drinks, energy drinks, ready-to-drink teas, kombucha, "smart" drinks, fortified fruit drinks, plant milks, and enhanced water.

Are you in to those?

Although these beverages may serve to hydrate a consumer, research doesn’t appear to indicate they have no proven health effects, and accordingly appear not to be "functional".

Let’s examine a popular one.

Kombucha, also tea mushroom, tea fungus, or Manchurian mushroom when referring to the culture; is a fermented, lightly effervescent, sweetened black tea drink. Sometimes the beverage is called kombucha tea to distinguish it from the culture of bacteria and yeast. Juice, spices, fruit or other flavorings are often added. Kombucha tea is 95% water and contains 4% carbohydrates, but is otherwise devoid of significant nutrient content.

Here is what a reliable medical and health source that we have cited for easily ten years had to say about it. The respected team at webmd.com posts, “There is little scientific research to back up the many health claims manufacturers and avid kombucha fans make.”

Perhaps drink it, but keep the above in mind.

Water is wonderful for you. Over time, it can be a little, well, unexciting.

What about enhanced water?

Enhanced water is a category of beverages that are marketed as water with added ingredients, such as natural or artificial flavors, sugar, sweeteners, vitamins and minerals. Most enhanced waters are lower in calories than non-diet soft drinks.

PepsiCo, The Coca-Cola Company and other companies market enhanced water. The marketing usually capitalizes on the healthy image of water combined with the perceived health and taste.

Can enhanced waters be healthy for you?

Read the label. Truly. If it has sugars, that almost answers that question up front.

There is another wellness drink vying for your attention.

Read about it. Do your health homework. Consult your regular physician.

Then make a decision. Here goes.
