Newer Female Grapplers, You’re Good, Become Great, Develop A Powerful Weapon

January 8, 2024,

She has her strengths.

You’ve heard that before.

The flip side of that is that she has a number of weaknesses as well. But if she is a fully competitive female submission wrestler, and an effective one, she maximizes her strengths and minimizes her weaknesses. She focuses on your weaknesses and pounds away at them, until you can stop her. Don’t stop her?

She will keep doing it.

We saw that this year during the 2023 NCAA college football season, where one team became defenseless, once the other team found out what their weakness was. Then Team B would run the same play over and over and over and over to victory because Team A could not adjust to stop them or wasn’t skilled enough as coaches and players to do so.

On those female grappling mats, you as a newer female submission wrestler should learn all of the holds.

The capture of the headlock and falling on top of your opponent’s body is the first step.

Smothering her out would be a great second step.

In initial hand fighting, grabbing her wrist and pulling her downwards behind her neck is another basic move.

Very good. So you know the basics. You should become a good wrestler. But, if you want to become a great wrestler, you need to develop a weapon most of your opponents will not be able to stop.

Then, keep applying it over and over.

In the above football example, a crushing running game is a very powerful weapon. If a team tries to strategically place too many players close to the line to try and stop it, if opens them up to be burned for a run play fake, and get burned for a deep throw touchdown.

As we have watched female submission wrestling for decades, one weapon typically is not enough. You need a combination hold to become almost unstoppable.

Since the head lock is the basic and most powerful hold, try and bring her head close to your body and apply a strong scissor as well. When she tries to pick the lock, she has to pick one or the other.

At Grappling Stars Magazine, we write about San Francisco and London wrestlers most of the time. Two of our favorites are Mystique and Justice. Here is an excerpt from their battle. Notice how the eventual victorious wrestler applies a combination hold to get the job done.

Here it is.

“Mystique is relentless in trying to get Justice back down on those mats so she can put her away. Justice is fighting (and hard kicking) back with all that she’s got.

Mystique finally breaks through, forces Justice down to the mats and immediately head hunts from the top.

Justice is in trouble.

Mystique is countering from the crown of Justice’s body, trying to stay away from the harsh kicks.

Very wise.

Successful at avoiding the feminine girl’s legs, Mystique now applies a full mount as Justice cannot leg scissor what isn’t nearby. It is just a matter of time. Mystique closes in on the kill with a combination joint lock and smother and, for now, Justice is done.”

Bravo.

So, most combination holds will require strong arms and legs.

Let’s walk over to the bookstore for some technical suggestions.
